Barthalamas: Speed is Power

It's been a few weeks since I've completed the campaign mode of Splinterlands, and I received level one cards from the Foundation set. While I've already featured Marlai Singariel and Thalgrimore in my previous posts, there's another Foundation archon that I find to be good in the bronze league and that is Barthalamas.

Just like the other archons, Barthalamas is also a six mana cost card with one ability, and that is a +1 in speed. Through my short experience playing in modern, I've noticed how important having the first attack is. Some units sometimes don't even have the opportunity to deal any damage because they are literally killed in the start of the round. So Barthalamas giving +1 to speed is a significant ability, especially if the enemy's speed is faster or almost as fast as my own units.

As for my lineup, I first need a good front defense. For the fire element, I have Drybone Megalodon which has both good health and armor points. It also perfectly counters melee enemies if it reaches level 4 with Retaliate and Thorns at the final level.

Another Foundation card that I always use is Chaos Furybringer. This card is very handy as a backup to the tank as it has good speed and melee attack. The only problem I have with this card is that it has very low health which is a problem when the tank dies and it becomes the front unit.

Since Chaos Furybringer is a bit weak, I like to put Great Bear Druid next to it as a backup to the backup tank. It has dual attack so it uses magic when it is in the middle of the team and the melee attack is also unlocked once it gets infront. And unlike Chaos Furybringer, this card has a better health which can withstand maybe two or three attacks.

Chaos Evoker is probably one of the most important piece of this strategy. The magic damage it unleashes is very powerful when combined with its ability, Blast, which can potentially damage one or two more units. And with the bonus speed from Barthalamas, it increases the chance for it to attack first.

Finally, we have two range units in the backline of the team. Ash Archer and Sturdy Axe Warden both have similar attack damage and speed at the first level.

The difference is that Sturdy Axe Warden is only a common which means it has a downside. That is the mana cost to use it which is 8. That is very high and I sometimes do not include it in some matches where the mana cost is very limited. But they both do well in damaging the enemy cards.

Next, we have a match using the exact lineup that I mentioned above. Here is the link to the battle.

As you can see, the enemy is very, very slow, with the speed ranging from 1 to 2 only. This is a great advantage for me because with the additional speed bonus from Barthalamas, not only do I ensure that all my units attack first, they may even have a better chance to dodge melee and range attacks.

And true enough, attacking first made a difference as the opponent's Janni Rebel dies first at the first round. It was quickly followed by the death of Great Bear Druid and Sherringham Logger.

Although in the middle of the match, the two magic casters of the opponent, Mystic Mudbinder and Thunderous Herald did heavy damage to my team as well.

Speed has finally prevailed and the quick attacks of my cards finally got me the win in this battle. This strategy may be improved more in the future by using stronger cards and those that have the Swiftness ability. I'll do an update once I got that level of gameplay.

Speed is so underrated. Not only does it give your monsters the chance to strike first, it can help them dodge subsequent attacks, which is an absolute lifesaver.
