Don’t Underestimate Divine Shield in Frontier

Hello Splinterlands family,

This week I want to shine a little light on an ability that might be overlooked or underestimated, especially by newer players. For veterans this will feel like a no-brainer, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that can make a big difference when you’re just starting out.

I’m talking about Divine Shield.

What Divine Shield Does

Divine Shield is simple on paper but powerful in battle. It absorbs the first hit of any kind melee, ranged, or magic. That means the first strike that would normally chip away your armor or health simply disappears. It doesn’t matter how much damage the attack had, Divine Shield just shrugs it off.

That one saved attack can swing an entire battle. It can buy you an extra turn, let your backline breathe a little longer. Sometimes, it’s literally the difference between victory and defeat.

Meet Asel Alagosdil

In Frontier, the unit that brings Divine Shield is Asel Alagosdil. It’s an Epic card, so newer players might not have it right away. Honestly, it was one of the last cards I pulled from packs myself, and even today some of my alt accounts don’t have it yet. But don’t let that discourage you. With time, patience, and the steady grind, you’ll get there.

At first glance, Asel doesn’t look very impressive. No attack, only 4 health, and it can’t be weapon trained. On paper, you might think, “Why would I play this?” But the value lies not in stats—it lies in that shiny Divine Shield.

How to Play It

Depending on what I expect my opponent to play, I often slot Asel either in the frontline or all the way in the back.

Frontline use: absorbs the first blow and buys time for your real tank to get healing or for your damage dealers to start working.

Backline use: great as a bodyguard against sneaks or snipes. One/Two wasted attack from the enemy can keep your fragile DPS alive.

It’s not flashy, but it’s effective.

Battle Examples

Here are some matches where Divine Shield made all the difference:

👉 Match 1

– Nim Guard Captain’s first attack was completely absorbed, giving me the breathing room I needed to turn the match.

👉 Match 2

– In this fight, Divine Shield kept me alive one more turn. Without it, Kicking Roc would have dropped me to 1 HP and Dread Tafarian would’ve finished me in round one. That single shield shifted the entire outcome.

👉 Match 3

– And just to keep it real, here’s a loss. Divine Shield isn’t a guaranteed win button. In this one, I was simply outmatched against a level 4 squad while I only had level 2. No ability in the game can patch that gap!

Why New Players Should Care

For new players, this is a reminder not to ignore abilities that don’t look fancy at first glance. You might be tempted to always chase raw damage or huge stats. But Splinterlands is a game of small advantages stacking up. One ability triggering at the right moment can flip the script.

Divine Shield might not win you every match, but it can absolutely save you from losing matches you otherwise would have. And that’s why I say—don’t underestimate it.

Final Thoughts

Asel Alagosdil isn’t a meta-defining card. It’s not going to dominate leaderboards by itself. But in the right place, at the right time, with the right ability—it’s a lifesaver. That’s the beauty of Splinterlands. Every card has its moment, and sometimes the ones you least expect end up saving the day.

So next time you’re building a Frontier team and you’re unsure what to fill that slot with, give Asel a try. You might be surprised how often Divine Shield bails you out of a tough situation.
