Earth vs Dragon

This is a 36 mana cap battle that has the Fire and Regret ruleset. This means that all monsters will have the return fire ability. This allows attacked monster to return damage after getting hit by attacks.
I chose to go with Obsidian who gives plus 1 magic damage to all magic monsters. While my opponent went with Kretch Tallevor who gives an armor buff to all allied monsters. Now this is a good start for me as I was able to completely disregard armors selecting a magic lineup.

The Matchup

One mistake that I made was that I assumed my enemy would also choose a magic lineup. I chose Failed Summoner as my first position tank which has the magic reflect ability, this card choice is really wrong as I was actually tired from playing many games and this card would just be irrelevant as it does not have any attacks, Mycelic Slipspawn with the taunt ability will attract oncoming damage, Unicorn Mustang has the void ability which is a good counter against magic monsters, Regal Peryton which has high speed and flying ability would be good for evasion, Goblin Psychic is in charge of support with its tank heal ability, and Khmer Princess completes my lineup.

My opponent went with Dragon combined with Dark Deck. Djinn Chwala which has the thorns ability that does reflect damage, Twilight Basilisk can attack from the second position as it has the reach ability, Silent Sha-vi will damage the backlines with its sneak attack, Ravenhood Warden has the protect ability which further gives bonus armor to all allied monsters, Sand Worm and Uraeus are both melee monsters which can deal backline damage due to sneak attack.

Round 1

Midway through the first round my failed summoner was already eliminated from gameplay by the Ravenhood Warden. It has been completely irrelevant at it could not do any return damage and the enemy lineup does not have any magic monsters. The mycelic slipspawn moves to first position.

Turn 12 and my mycelic slipspawn was already eliminated by an attack from the sandworm. A major rule that I forgot is that a monster could only return fire once per round. and having this taunt monster is proving to be ineffective against my enemies lineup. It's just the first round and I'm already at a huge disadvantage.
image.png

Finally my lineup starts to fight back by slaying Djinn Chwalla from attacks of my khmer princess and goblin psychic. The twilight basilisk moves into first position and is head to head with my unicorn mustang.

Round 2

The unicorn mustang is also proving to be ineffective in this matchup. Because it does melee damage it was only able to remove the armor of the twilight basilisk after getting hit by my regal peryton and reducing it's hp to 1. A counter attack from the silent sha-vi sent my khmer princess to the graveyard. I am still behind in terms of monster count with 3 vs 4 in favor of my enemy.
image.png

Before the second round ended my goblin psychic was next to go down due to combined attacks from the Sandworm and Uraeus. And while my unicorn msutang returned damage to the ravenwood warden, It wasn't really able to damage its health as it only destroyed its amor.

Round 3

The Regal Peryton was first to move destroying the twilight basilisk and sending it to the graveyard.
image.png

Round 3 ended with me still facing a disadvantage is monster count. The Ravenhood Warden is now down to 1 health. My unicorn mustang and silent sha-vi is both at 5 health. And while my regal peryton has the flying ability and was able to evade some attacks, it can die in one hit by the sandworm.

Round 4

Fighting back in the fourth round, attacks from my unicorm mustang and regal peryton both connected to the slient sha-vi effectively removing it from play. The ravenhood would move to first position where it is unable to attack. However my regal peryton is exposed in the back from attacks from sandworm and ureus.

image.png

Still alive, my regal peryton has evaded the strong attack of the sandworm but was hit by the uraeus. At this stage I still have a bit of chance.
image.png

Round 5

My Regal Peryton opens the attack on the Ravenhood Warden and was eliminated from contest. While the monster count is tied at 2 a piece. I am still behind given that one of my monsters is a mellee and its attacks won't connect until armor has been removed.
image.png

A bit unluck that my regal peryton again did not avoid the attack of the uraeus so it got hit and was removed from play.

image.png

Following up by the attack from the sandworm. My remaining monster the unicorn mustang is also down and out.

I might have lost this match but it offered a lot of learnings, as well as reminders for a returning player like me.
