The Many Currencies of Splinterlands

Hard to Keep Track of All These Numbers

Splinterlands has a good number of different currencies that may be spent in a wide variety of ways. Some currencies share similar functions in what they may purchase, while others have unique uses. A couple different currencies may be seen at the top of your screen, but those are only a few of many in the game.

Credits

Credits are the only currency that can be bought directly from Splinterlands for fiat, and may not be traded or sold. Credits may be bought using either Paypal or cryptocurrency. Credits may be used to purchase items from the shop or market, meaning you can use credits to buy cards, packs, and potions. Credits may also be used to rent cards from the market if you choose.

You can no longer purchase Quest potions using Credits.

Dark Energy Crystals(DEC)

Dark Energy Crystals would likely be considered the main currency of Splinterlands, it even says so on the DEC info page. DEC may be earned through ranked battles, or by burning cards. DEC can also be swapped for various Cryptocurrencies on the Splinterlands website.

DEC has many different uses currently. You may purchase all the same things as with Credits and more. DEC may also be used to purchase card skins, Quest potions, and guild contributions. DEC will also most likely be used to purchase the upcoming “Riftwatchers” packs, which will be similar to the previous Azmare Dice.

DEC also contributes to your total Airdrop points, which helps you earn the next currency; SPS.

Splintershards(SPS)

Splintershards are the official governance token of Splinterlands. SPS may be purchased through third-party exchanges such as PancakeSwap or gate.io. SPS are also airdropped to players daily based on their total airdrop points. The more assets a player holds in Splinterlands, the more SPS they will receive daily.

SPS may be staked in Splinterlands to receive a number of benefits, as of late the most notable has been the addition of voucher airdrops. Players receive yet another currency based upon how much SPS they have staked.

SPS may also be used to purchase card packs, and receives an additional 10% discount.

Vouchers

Some may not consider Vouchers to be currency, but based upon the latest AMA (October 29th, 2021) they will be able to be used in a fractional form to purchase items/benefits in the future. Sounds like a currency to me.

Unlike previously mentioned currencies, vouchers can not be seen at the top of your screen. In order to see your amount of vouchers, check the "Shop" tab under "Packs".

Vouchers are the most recent "currency" added to Splinterlands. Currently, their only function is to allow the purchase of pre-sale packs in conjunction with another currency. But, there are big plans for vouchers underway and they will likely have a large amount of importance in the future.

Guild Currencies

As one might expect, guilds have their own set of currency that can be earned and spent. There are two major guild currencies:

  • Merits
    • Merits are earned from participating in brawls and may be spent at the guild shop for a small number of items related to brawls such as Gladius cases and SpyGlass. Each level of the Guild Store increases the amount of earned Merits.

  • Crowns
    • Crowns are also earned from brawls but have a very different function. Crowns are shared as a guild balance, rather than to an individual player. Only the Leader and Co-Leader may spend Crowns in order to upgrade various guild buildings. The three buildings Crowns are used for are: Arena, Barracks, and Store.

Wrapping Up

Although there are many different currencies in Splinterlands, it is not difficult to keep track of them thanks to the convenient system put in place by the dev team. If you ever need to see all your currencies or assets you can head to the "Cards" tab and click the small brown pouch marked (Other). With the addition of land functionality on the way I believe it may be possible to see even more currencies in the near future.
