How do Tournaments Events Work in Splinterlands?

Tournaments Events in Splinterlands I've noticed is one thing that is rarely ever talked about on the official blogging platform Splintertalk and Hive, so I decided to create one post about it!.

For someone like me who relies heavily on the contents I read on Splintertalk and Hive to catch up with terms and playing strategy in Splinterlands, I was late to fully dance in the tune of Tournaments to put it one way. It seemed simple to the eye, yet hard to take into stride. With plenty of good content about Battles, Card Strategy, Marketplace, and Monsters, I wondered why no one really talked about Tournaments, - were they less popular in-game? Surely Not, - were they less profitable, cancel that thought too. This Gap I thought might be costing newbies to Splinterlands a fun slice of the game and possibly homing in on better rewards. This post would show you everything you need to see about tournaments in splinterlands, with that in mind, Let's dive in!

Tournament Categories and Qualifications

The first point to understand in Tournaments is that, and hopefully, if you play Splinterlands, you already know this - ranks exist. As it is, there are ranks that help players decide where they should compete and where they cannot compete (The easiest way to understand this is by saying - Tournaments are created with certain rules based on ranks that can only accommodate players belonging to that rank, i.e if you are in the silver league you can't compete in a bronze capped Tournament)

Examples of rules you can see in a Splinterland Tournament;
RulesReferenceMeaning
This event has Novice league level caps for Summoners and Monstersimg_event-level_0.pngYou can only compete in such event if you are in Novice league
All cards playable may be usedimg_playable-all.pngYou can use any cards available in your deck,(Gold, Legendary, Common, Whatever)
No legendary cards may be usedimg_playable-no_legendaries.pngYou cannot use any legendary cards available in your deck, Only(Common, Rare, Epic) It goes without saying to know your card deck before joining a tournament
This event has a bronze league level cap, Only gold cards may be usedimg_playable-gold_only.pngimg_event-level_1.pngYou can only use Gold Cards AND you must be ranked in the Bronze league(Bronze I, II, or III)

These are examples of some rules you can see in tournaments that must be followed accordingly, sometimes there are rather than just double rules, triple and even quadruple rules.

Tournaments are a great Earning source

As we speak, the total funds that have been given away in all Splinterlands Tournament are Over 1 Million Dollars. No running away from that, literally don't. I mean why should you? - Tournaments are certainly MORE competitive but that competition is not too far away from what I meet daily in ranked battles(ranked battles are pretty competitive). Don't worry, there are still lots of rewards you can earn.

Tournaments are very lucrative, can be for all splinterlands players, but maybe I should mention - especially for beginners(I should probably change my wording). By Beginners, I don't necessarily mean players who just started playing, You could've been active for the past two months I mean. Why do I say so? Simply for three main reasons;

  • Most Beginners don't have a huge card deck for renting in the marketplace(SO that earning channel is dry)
  • Having to wait for the end of season rewards can be a PAIN (With no other income streams, progress CAN be slow)
  • With the new rewards system implemented by Splinterlands at the start of October, all Bronzed capped players earn even lesser rewards. You can read the official posting here

Albeit, tournaments are open for ALL anytime, any day, with several tournaments available ** every day**.

Initial paymets for registering in Tournaments

This seems to be the right place to address the funding system. To participate in tournaments, you need registration funds (in the form of DEC and SPS tokens). The idea is to stake a small number of tokens with the chance of earning bigger amounts at the end of tournaments and depending on where you stand in the table. Sometimes shelling out that initial payment can be worrisome for most players, after all, there's no guarantee that you're gonna WIN(Just). But after winning some rewards, you would find it easier to pay the upfront fee standing a chance to WIN MORE!

Of all the entry fees, DEC and SPS tokens are the most used and you can find tournaments fee requirements from as little as 1 Dec to as much as 100 SPS, 100 SPS isn't necessarily the maximum entry fee you can find, but let's leave that to the experts (Anyone who dares to shell out such amounts should be guaranteed of winning back)!

How to win in a tournament;

If you're familiar with Soccer tournaments and competitions(FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League, etc), you can correlate the ranking system used to tournaments in Splinterlands, - Competition between different parties, teams, players at each level/stage/round AND the elimination of the losers at the end, the next stage occurs using this same process.

I created the illustration below to give a visual idea of the elimination process in Splinterlands tournaments; [Imagine we have 16 players AND it is a lot less mean with no dark void xD]

To win a tournament in splinterlands, you need to steadily ascend across all rounds to the top. As simple as that, but easier said than done. Before deciding to create this post, I made sure to improve my experience of how tournaments work by participating in as many as I can afford, and well - It isn't easy to win, MAN, did I see people with strategies just like mine. - Strategies that guarantee (almost) me a win in normal ranked battles. When faced with such a situation, you need to think differently, precisely, Faster thinking

The two things every winner needs to overcome in tournaments;

  • A variety of Rules in Battles that you must use to your advantage; In tournaments, whether for bronze, silver, gold-capped ranks, you are gonna see different rules applied to battles that can either be advantageous or destructive to your strategy, you have just a few minutes to work things out (think of the max around 2 mins), and you must, because your opponent is.

  • You need to know how to play Splinterlands (Almost Thoroughly);
    Tournaments showed me that I wasn't yet fully equipped in my strategical views, if I had another way of putting this - I would simply say, know every Splinter, their strengths and weaknesses and how to use those against each splinter, to some mad degree , I would also point out to know Every Monster xD. And yeah that's crazy!. Tournaments like i said, revealed my weakness to me early, I knew the team I loved, that would win MOST battles for me, and I was negligent towards others.

SO as much as this tip is crazy, it isn't adsurb(please notice the difference), Any splinterlands real Fan can go to such lenghts - and yeah, winning would come easier and also the rewards too.

My Notes on Stages of a Splinterlands Tournamnets

This guide has officialy come to an end with the above conclusion in , I've said what needs to be said, what you read beyond this is just extra hints for those who like to know what to expect( those that likes having all cards on deck before starting to play).

  • A typical Splinterlands tournament is played in Rounds (1 after the other)

  • After registering, you wait until the time of commencement (This can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days)

checked_in.png

  • Tournamnets in Splinterlands has (usually) a Min and Max number of participants that can play(i.e some tournaments take an unlimited number of participant)

  • You are drawn to face a particular opponent for a number of games (usually 3), and according to the Pyramid Illustration above, you ascend to the next level if you come out successful

three games opponent.png

  • Next round begins and the cycle continues, at every stage the losers are crossed out, and competition continues.

  • For each battle you have about 2 minutes to pick your team and once battle commences, you are yet still timed, with about 4 minutes to get back for the next battle

4 Min timed battles.png

Now that you've read all these, Get out there and become a Champion. No matter what the outcome may be, You WOULD NOT regret participating in a splinterlands tournament. They are thrilling, fun, and flexible, everything a true battle fan desires, and if you still regret it after - Well, you can hold my neck for that (In Comments) xD.

Disclamier 1; Any Rigid Information (particularly involving numbers) given in this post are subject to change or vary at any time, depending on tournaments you join and further updates by the splinterland team
Disclaimer 2; This is NOT financial advice, I only created the post to draw awareness to tournaments in splinterlands since there weren't many such post. Only abide knowing that you may lose your initial registration fess without immediate returns.

With that being said, we've come to the end of this post, thanks for reading and I hope it would serve it's purpose with you!
