Hello Guys
Today I will share another thought about Splinterlands battle. In the past, employing a Gladiator card was one of the favorite meta, many players tended to use that simple tactics. Spamming Quora Towershead was one of the infamous approach, although later on people started to develop some meta(s) to counter it.
As the game progressed and now we can not use Gladiator card at our will, meta(s) using Gladiator started to fade away. Somehow I keep seeing people use Gladiator cards in a wrong way, frequently. Not saying people get dumber, but more newer version cards make people shift focus on them, forgetting what they have been using before.
So what I want to share now, is about one of the problem in using Gladiator cards. They are strong, nobody denies it, and most of the cases, their bloodlust ability are the ability that sets the distinction between Gladiator cards and regular cards, although some regular cards have bloodlust ability too.
The case is simple, some people somehow start to think the more Gladiator cards they set into their line up, the stronger their line up will become... well hell no, it a big wrong!
Let me employ a battle here, so we can see more clearly what I mean by having more Gladiators doesn't make your line up stronger.
Ok this is the battle I pick, it is from one of the recent Brawl I have. In a brawl match, we can use a Gladiator card, however in this battle, my opponent uses two Gladiator cards.
He uses Lobb Lowland summoner, so he could extract the conscript ability by adding another gladiator card. Lobb Lowland debuffs -1 speed to all of his opponent, making himself as a good Summoner.
I could use Lobb Lowland too, but I choose not to because it's a 38 mana cap battle. I think I need some spare mana to get some units I want to have, able to enter the line up.
Ok let's see their tactic or meta based on their Gladiator cards
They choose to go with the best option, Quora Towershead. In this battle, I believe the best option is to go with Quora Towershead and the second one is to go with Katrelba Gobson.
Debatable, Quora is the strongest Gladiator Card. She could fit in many meta or many tactic you want, although it will be still not a guarantee to win that battle.
His second Gladiator card is Bertrol Gobson. A unique choice, in general I would say this is a good choice, but not in this battle. All of the units in the battlefield have a shield ability from the ruleset, it reduces the efficiency of small unit with opportunity ability greatly.
So it is not a wise choice from my perspective. hitting 1 melee damage per round until this Gobson gets a buff up from bloodlust... well if he manages to make a kill... but I doubt it will happen.
So how about me?
I really want to go with Quora Towershead, but I do not have her in Gold Foil. I am always playing in Gold Foil frays and I do not have Quora Towershead Gold Foil, that's enough reason to flop lol.
Katrelba Gobson is a big gambling too for me, she has very low health point and she could be easily countered by thorn or by incoming opportunity attacks.
So let's see how this will progress...
In general, both of us use similar tactic, which we put a backline wall with a unit with thorn ability. Mine would not work because they do not have any sneak attacker, however their thorn wall is a threat to my Katrelba Gobson.
The big different lies in the front line. They use extra meat wall while I decide to gang ho with all attacking units. I have no meat wall, all my unit must join in attacks.
Later this attacking threats become one of key winning point.
Let's fast forward to round 3. They have lose 2 units and one of the was taken down by my Katrelba Gobson. I was lucky the ruleset gives my Gobson a shield ability, if it doesnt, she would have died from the thorn.
Their Quora Towershead gets a buff up too, from their martyr who dies in the first round. However it doesn't make her strong enough to kill my Flesh Golem.
Now the fourth round.. My Katrelba gobson killed their Goblin Psychic and their Bertrol Gobson. Now their Terraceous Grunt becomes a dead weight. It supposes to guard their Bertrol Gobson incase Quora Towershead falls down, but now the order is reversed. He is useless now.
Now this is the last round, round 6th. It can be easily said that the battle becomes one sided and they lose this battle very badly. I literally dominate the battle in every aspect.
If we see this battle deeply, we can see that the reason why they lose badly is not because my line up is better or stronger in every aspect. The reason they lose badly is because they put in two gladiator cards. These two make them:
- Shift focus, and aim to defend the gladiators which end up good but cost them attacking power that make them unable to kill my Flesh Golem.
- Because they tried their best in guarding their Gladiator cards, they forget to set up buff and debuff. They made a martyr buff, which was great, but that's it. Nothing more.
So in the end, I believe their intention to employ more Gladiator cards is their biggest mistake. I do not know how others will see this, do share your thought in the comment belows.
