In yesterday's post I shared why I'm starting a second account and building it up from zero with no money dropped on the game. All progress will come from investing my time in the game and the community. And after a few seasons (maybe more) we'll see where things lie.
One thing that is easy to overlook in the current hype of youtube thumbnails that promise "MASSIVE GAINZ!!1!" is that play 2 earn gaming, like anything worthwhile, takes effort. And you absolutely cannot go from zero to hero in a matter of days, weeks, or even months, no matter what cracked out influencer says otherwise.
But with this project I hope to show not only what is possible, but to highlight some important parts of the communtity that get lost in the hype. Namely, all of the other things going on on the Hive blockchain, the blockchain that Splinterlands runs on. So, that's what today's post is all about.
Strap in, because this will be a little long. I'll try to keep it brief, but it's important. My examples are on desktop in Opera browser. You may need to modify some steps for your particular situation.
Don't overlook this if you're a noob. I'll discuss why it's important at the end of this blog post. I'll also share my progress today.
Step 1 - Get Your Hive Keys
In any blockchain you participate in, your keys are gold. Have them, store them in multiple safe locations, and DO NOT SHARE THEM. When you bought your spellbook, Splinterlands made a Hive account for you and you can request your keys from the Splinterlands interface opening up the entire Hive ecosystem to you.
To get your keys click on your username in the Splinterlands game and select "Request Account Keys". I could be wrong, but I think you can do this ONCE. So, make sure you do these steps carefully.
The next screen should look like this:
Note where it says Splinterlands is not responsible for lost or stolen keys. They mean this. Every blockchain account means this. You lose your keys, you lose your account, and its assets. It's unlikely you can get them back. Protect your keys. Read that last sentence again.
Once you receive the email and click through to get your keys you'll be taken to this screen which has your username, master password, owner key, active key, posting key, and memo key. These all do different things. We'll worry about that later. Record them in multiple places that aren't connected to the internet for safe keeping. Google how to protect your keys for ideas that will work for you.
Step 2 - Set Up Hive Keychain
Hive Keychain is a browser extension (or an app on your phone) that manages these keys for you so you don't have to keep putting them in every time you want to do something on Hive. It's useful. Go to Hive-Keychain.com to get it.
Select where you'll install it, and install it like you usually would any other browser extension or app.
Once installed, open the extension or app and set up a password. You can choose this one, but make it safe.
Next, you're going to click "Use Keys/PWD" to add your keys. Putting in your username and master password on the next screen should be sufficient.
Finally, check all of the boxes and click Save so that Hive Keychain can manage your keys.
When you're done, you should see this interface from your app, and you can see that I have ZERO Hive, Hive Power or anything. We'll talk about what those are in another post. Moving on...
Step 3 - Posting on Splintertalk.io to Earn Crypto
As a new player, you'll very likely earn more by blogging about the game and creating content than you will from playing in the beginner leagues. Playing and creating together is the way to use your time if you are going strictly Free 2 Play or very low investment.
The best place to start engaging with the community is on Splintertalk.io. There are other social front-ends to Hive, but let's keep it simple and Splinterlands focused for now. Go to Splintertalk and click "Login".
The login screen looks like this. Since you have already set up Keychain, you'll have no problems. Check the boxes and click the "Login" button.
When the Keychain extension pops up (check your popup blocker if it doesn't pop up), allow it to sign on your behalf.
Once you're signed in you'll find useful navigation from a dropdown by clicking on your profile picture.
You'll also be able to see your wallet that will show how many SPT tokens you have earned from blogging and engaging with the community. I'll get into the particulars of how those are tallied up and distributed in tomorrow's post. But this is what your wallet will look like. Again, mine's at zero so you know I'm starting FRESH.
Next Steps
Start reading posts. Start commenting on posts and upvoting on posts. You have a finite amount of upvotes to give each day, and again, I'll talk about that tomorrow. But for now JUST START.
Tag your posts with useful and descriptive tags, but definitely use #splinterlands and #spt tags.
Here are the benefits to blogging and creating Splinterlands content.
- Earn More Crypto!
- Be a part of the community. Make friends. Friends are good.
- Support the game and the community that you are hoping helps you to have abundance in your life. Abundance is a 2 way street.
- Learn about how blockchains work, and in particular how absolutely awesome Hive is.
Today's Progress
