Share Your Battle Challenge : FLYING SQUID | Keep Yourself Out Of Reach From This Squid

Hey there my awesome Splinterlands community,
I hope you're doing great this weekend.

I wrote an extensive article about the battle I fought along with Antoid Platoon in the past week's 'share your battle challenge'.
I hope you'll find this article engaging and fun to read.

And, I'm so excited to write about this week's 'Splinterlands Share Your Battle Challenge' and this week's featured monster is Flying Squid.

Just like the previous challenges, I'll share my best battle of this week using Flying Squid in my team.
I'll also share my strategy, team combination, and thoughts about the Flying Squid.

So, read on...

The Captain, The Crew And The Squids

Share Your Battle Flying Squid.gif

The Chaos Legion captain stood at the helm of the ship, gazing out at the empty sea. The sky was an overcast gray, and a brisk breeze ruffled his hair. A large flock of seagulls skimmed the surface of the water, flying ever closer.

He squinted his eyes. The birds drew nearer. As they did, he saw they weren't gulls at all. They were white, yes, but instead of wings and feathers, they had smooth, sheeny skin and tentacles that waved through the air.

From high above in the ship's crow's nest came the cry of alarm. “Flying Squid, twelve o'clock!”

The crew sprang into action, but it was already too late. Before most could reach for their weapons, the squid were upon them. The creatures fired sprays of ink, blinding the men and women below. Those that were able to take up arms flailed uselessly at the creatures, who stayed just out of each, striking with their long and muscular tentacles.

The captain drew his saber and swung at a squid as it whizzed at his head. He missed, and it shot a stream of ink into his face. His eyes burned, and the blinded captain wiped at them futilely.

A tentacle wrapped around his ankle. Another encircled his wrist. He struggled, but his other ankle and wrist were soon grabbed by more tentacles.

They began to pull him apart and, oh, how he screamed.

BATTLE STATS AND ABILITIES OF FLYING SQUID

Before I share my strategy and battle, let's talk about the stats and abilities of this card.

Flying Squid Stats.png

The Flying Squid is a Common Water unit card from the Chaos Legion edition.
Costs 7 mana to use this card in the battle which makes this card a moderately high mana-cost card.
This melee attack monster has the 'reach' ability that starts from level 1, which makes this card able to perform melee attacks from the 2nd position.
From level 6 it gains the 'blind' ability. With this debuff ability, it forces all the opponent's melee and ranged attack monsters to miss their attacks.
Then, at the highest level, this card achieves the 'backfire' ability. With this ability, if an enemy monster misses this monster with an attack, the attacker takes 2 damages.
Stats of this card also increases through levels, from 2 melee attacks, 3 speeds, and, 8 health in level 1, to 3 melee attacks, 4 speeds, and 8 health in level 6.
At the highest level, the stats of this card are 3 melee attacks, 5 speeds, and, 10 health.
This card has no armor that's why it's a great combo with the summoner Kelya Frendul that gives this card +1 armor and increases its speed +1.

MARKETPLACE STATS OF FLYING SQUID

As we can see, the current circulation of the regular foil of this card is 168696 nos. and the gold foil is 13551 nos.
The lowest price for one can buy a regular foil Flying Squid is $0.07 and a gold foil is $1.01. Its burn value is 5 DEC for regular foil and 125 DEC for gold foil.
There are 1818 nos. regular foil and 218 nos. gold foil Flying Squid listed on the market.
Till now, 574 nos. regular foil and 5 nos gold foil version of this card was burned.

What is the best ruleset and summoner to use Flying Squid ?

As this is a melee attack card, therefore the best rulesets to use this card are based on melee attack, like 'up close and personal', 'super sneak', 'melee mayhem' etc..
Additionally, one can use this card in the various other rulesets too, like the 'equal opportunity', 'odd ones out', 'rise of the common', etc.
About the summoner, as this card has no armor, therefore using Kelya Frendul as the summoner with this card will be the best combo.
Alternatively, Lir Deepswimmer is also the second choice of summoner. But that will be costlier in terms of mana as both the card and the summoner costs 7 mana to use them at the battle.

THE BATTLE

Now, it's time to share my strategy and the lineup for the best battle I won using the Flying Squid in my team.
Kindly note that I've played a few other battles together with Flying Squid. And I found this battle most interesting to me.
Below, I'll share the links to those other battles too. Feel free to check those if you're interested.

RULESET

Ruleset.png

Mana Cap: 56
Ruleset:
Unprotected: Monsters do not have any armor and do not get armor from abilities or summoner buffs.
Equalizer: The initial health of all monsters is equal to that of the monster on either team with the highest base health.
Active Splinter: Fire, Water, Dragon

My Strategy and Team Setup

SUMMONER

KELYA FRENDUL

Kelya Frendul.png

As I said above, Kelya Frendul is the best summoner that goes perfectly with the Flying Squid.
+1 armor buff of Kelya Frendul provides the Flying Squid an additional armor, while +1 speed buff makes him faster.
I rented a level 3 Kelya Frendul, especially for this battle challenge.
Tough, it's not able to provide the +1 armor buff as one of the rulesets is 'unprotected'.

TEAM SETUP

Team setup.png

The battle was a high 56 mana cap battle and with the equalizer ruleset, all the monsters will have the same health as the highest health monster of each team.
I used the Serpent Of Eld as the tank card because of its 'dodge' ability and high amount of melee attack and speed.
Next, the Flying Squid is the obvious choice for the 2nd position as with its 'reach' ability, it can attack from the 2nd position.
The Demented Shark is in the 3rd position to increase the melee attack +1 of all friendly monsters with its 'inspire' ability.
Next, the Sand Worn is in the 4th position. This high attack card has the sneak ability which is a nightmare for the opponents in the unprotected ruleset, as this card can destroy the last positioned opponent's card with just a single hit.
In the 5th position, I placed the Phantom Of The Abyss.
With the 'dodge' and 'flying' ability, this card has the best chance to miss out opponent's melee and ranged attack.
In the last position, I put a high damage ranged attack card, the Azmare Harpoonist. This completes my perfect team with melee, ranged, and magic attacks.

Team Submission

Share Your Battle Flying Squid Team Submission.gif

Upon submitting my team I found that my opponent used Drake Of Arnak as the summoner.
He used Djinn Chwala with thorn ability in the tank position which is a clever strategy in this melee attack-based battle.
He placed Carnage Titan with the 'reach' and 'double strike' ability in the 2nd position. which has a good amount of melee attack.
In the 3rd position, he placed the River Hellondale with the 'resurrect' and the 'inspire' ability, which is another clever move in this melee attack-based battle.
In the 5th and the 6th position, he placed the Sand Worm and the Axemaster.
My team seems weak compared to his team.

Round 01

Share Your Battle Flying Squid Round 01.gif

Round 1 starts with applying the buff and the debuff effects for both teams.
Being the fastest card of the team, my Phantom Of The Abyss made the first attack on the opponent's Djinn Chwala.
Then my Serpent Of Eld attacks on the Djinn Chwala and due to thorn takes back 2 melee damages.
Next, the Azmare Harpoonist attacked the Djinn Chwala and wrecked it. The River Hellondale resurrects it immediately.
Then the Axemaster made the first attack from the opponent's team. From the dual attack, 1 attack got missed.
Next, the Flying Squid made its first attack on the Djinn Chwala and demolished it and in return, it takes 2 melee attacks back due to the thorn ability of Djinn Chwala.
The Carnage Titan was replaced in the 1st position and made a dual attack on the Serpent Of Eld, but one attack got missed.
Then the opponent's Deeplurker attacked the Serpent and wrecked it. The Flying Squid was replaced in the 1st position.
Next, my Sand Worm made a heavy 6 melee attack on the Axemaster.
Then the River Hellondale attacked the Flying Squid and the opponent's Sand Worm Attacked the Azmare Harpoonist.

Round 02

Share Your Battle Flying Squid Round 02.gif

Just like the previous round, the Phantom Of The Abyss attacked first on the Carnage Titan and the Azmare Harpoonist followed next to attack the Carnage Titan.
The Axemaster succeeded to make a double strike on the Flying Squid.
The Flying Squid then demolished the opponent's Carnage Titan and the Deeplurked avenged his death and Wrecked the Flying Squid.
The Demented Shark was replaced in the 1st position then my Sand Worm, which destroyed the Axemaster completely.
Next, the opponent's Sand Worm wrecked my Azmare Harpoonist in its next attack.

Round 03 / 04

Share Your Battle Flying Squid Round 03 04.gif

Starting of round 3, my Phantom Of The Abyss and the Demented Shark made a back-to-back attack on the River Hellondale.
Then the opponent's Deeplurker attacked my Demented Shark with a big 5 melee attack.
Next, my Sand Worm attacked the opponent's Sand Worm.
The opponent's River Hellondale attacked my Demented Shark and the opponent's Sand Worm missed its attack.

In round 4, my Phantom Of The Abyss and the Demented Shark jointly wrecked the River Hellondale.
The opponent's Deeplurker missed its attack on the Demented Shark and my Sand Worm destroyed the opponent's Sand Worm completely.

Round 05

Share Your Battle Flying Squid Round 05.gif

In round 5, my Demented Shark got destroyed and the Sand Worm wrecked the opponent's Deeplurker and secured the winning.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

Yes, my strategy definitely worked.
Using the Kelya Frendul wasn't the best idea in the 'unprotected' ruleset, but at least it speeds up my monsters so can they attack early and dodged a few attacks because of the high speed. As the wise man said, 'dodging an attack means making an attack.'
The Flying Squid did well being in the 2nd position and wrecked 2 important opponent's cards, the Djinn Chwala and the Carnage Titan.
The Demented Shark increased the melee attack of all the friendly monsters and my team becomes deadlier with high damage in the unprotected ruleset.
The Phantom Of The Abyss also dodges a big attack by the Sand Worm and stands strong till the end.
Because of this perfect strategy, I won the battle successfully.

My Takes On The Flying Squid

The Flying Squid is a bit costlier card in terms of mana cost, but you can take advantage of its 'reach' ability and high melee attack in the unprotected ruleset like this one.
Its high speed makes it an early attacker in the battle.
Also, if you can use a level 6 of this card, the enemy monsters may miss their attacks due to its 'blind' debuff effect.
Moreover, this is a very useful card in the mid-to-high mana cap battles and certain rulesets.
