Splinterlands SM Challenge : Exploring A Badass Ability | Let's Thorns The Enemy.

in Splinterlands2 years ago (edited)

Hey there my incredible Splinterlands community,
I hope you're in good health and in a happy mood.

As the Splinterlands team introduced the 'Merit' reward in daily focus chests, it got easier for so many peoples like me to accumulate enough merits to buy the 'Gladius' packs.
It's not like I didn't have 'merits' earlier. I was an active brawl player of the guild named EPIC. But after the new ranked reward system was introduced, I couldn't manage enough time to play brawl, as I spent most of my time playing ranked battles.
But I'll return to fight brawl when the SPS reward system will implement.

I accumulated enough merits from the daily focus chest and season rewards to buy a gladius pack and I want to share the pack opening and the result with you all.

Anyway, it's another week and time for another 'Splinterlands Social Media Challenge'.
As always, I'm here with another high-quality, engaging content.

As you all know the summoner Mylor Crowling, the only summoner having the 'thorns' buff.
In my earlier days of playing Splinterlands, I lost numerous battles to Mylor Crowling. That's why I hated this summoner and the thorns ability until one day, I rented him and started playing and started defeating opponents with thorns.
From that day, I got hooked on this ability, and obviously with the Mylor Crowling.
Now, I try to keep this summoner in my arsenal almost every day.

In today's article, I'll write about the 'thorns' ability and the summoner, and the monster/s that possess this ability.

So, read on..

What Is The 'Thorns' Ability And Why It's So Deadly??

When a card with the 'thorns' ability gets hit with a melee attack card, does damage back to the attacker.
That means when your melee attack card hit a 'thorns' ability card, at the same time your card will also lose health.
So, even if you have a high-attack, low-health card, and your opponents have a zero-attack, high-health card with thorns ability, it may possible that you lose the battle or the battle results in a draw.
That is why the 'thorns' ability is so deadly (and badass).

The Summoner Possess The 'Thorns' Ability

Mylor Crowling.png

As I said earlier, Mylor Crowling is the only summoner that possesses the 'thorns' ability. In simple words, Mylor Crowling buffs each monster of the friendly team with the 'thorns' ability.
Costs only 3 mana, this summoner is a badass.
As per my current league, I can rent up to level 6 of this summoner. But as you all know the renting costs are insane nowadays. Therefore, I use a level 4 of Mylor Crowling.

Monsters Possess The 'Thorns' Ability

As per info from the Peakmonsters, there are 30 monsters, that have the 'thorns' ability applied in different levels. But for the sake of ease of the writing, I'm mentioning only those who have the 'thorns' ability from level 1.

DJINN CHWALA

Djinn Chwala_lv1.png

Djinn Chwala is from the Dragon splinter.
With a huge 5 armor, 9 health, 2 melee attacks, and, 2 speeds, this beast can be the game changer for any melee attack-based battle.
It costs 8 mana, which is a bit higher than the average, but you can't really complain comparing its stats and the abilities.
I frequently use this monster in the last position to destroy the opponent's 'sneak' attack monsters.

CURSED WINDEKU

Cursed Windeku_lv1.png

Ah, here comes my favorite 'thorns' monster Cursed Windeku from the Death splinter.
It costs 6 mana to use it in the battle with the stats of 2 melee attacks, 3 speeds and 9 health. The only thing lacking in this monster is the armor.
But if you can use the level 5 of this monster, it comes with another very useful 'heal' ability. Not to mention the stats will also be improved greatly with the higher level.
This is my handy 'tank' monster for almost every battle of 'death' splinter

VENARI KNIFER

Venari Knifer_lv1.png

From the Earth splinter, Venari Knifer is a common monster of Chaos Legion edition.
With 2 melee attacks, 4 speeds, and, 7 health, Venari Knifer costs 6 mana to use in the battle.
Combining this card with the summoner Lyanna Natura will be the best bet as it'll increase the health of this card a bit.
I rarely use this card as I use Mylor Crowling for most of my Earth splinter battles. So no need to use a 'thorns' ability card when your summoner can buff all the friendly team monsters with the 'thorns' ability.
But as I said earlier, one can use this card with the summoner Lyanna Natura is they don't have the Mylor Crowling and still need to use a 'thorns' ability card in the battle.

THE BATTLE

Now, I'll share with you an interesting battle I played using the summoner Mylor Crowling and a team having the 'thorns' ability.

My Strategy and Team Setup

SUMMONER

MYLOR CROWLING

Mylor Crowling_lv1.png

As it's a melee attack-based battle (upclose & personal), I decided to use the Mylor Crowling as the summoner. This is my ultimate choice for the battles like this.
Also, with the 3 mana costs, this summoner is the best for the 30 mana cap battle.

TEAM SETUP

As this is the melee attack-based battle, I used Mycelic Infantry as the tank card because of its 'shield' ability, which helps him to take reduced damage from melee and ranged attacks.
Goblin Thief, a 'sneak' attack monster in the second position that will crack the opponent team from the backside.
In the third position, I used Venari Scout with the 'opportunity' ability, that will destroy the low-health monster of the opponent team.
Parasitic Growth, another 'opportunity' ability monster, I placed in the fourth position.
Next, in the fifth position, I used Brownie, a monster with the 'swiftness' ability, that will increase the speed of the friendly monsters.
Last, but not least, the Disintegrator is in the sixth position. With its 'demoralize' ability, it'll decrease the melee attack of the opponent monsters, which is very crucial for winning in every melee attack-based battle.

So, this was my final team -

First Position

MYCELIC INFANTRY:

Second Position

GOBLIN THIEF:

Third Position

VENARI SCOUT:

Fourth Position

PARASITIC GROWTH:

Fifth Position

BROWNIE:

Sixth Position

DISINTEGRATOR:

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

I can't think of a better strategy than this one.
Each card synchronized greatly with the summoner.
The Goblin Thief and the Venari Scout destroyed the enemy backline cards and the 'thorns' ability helped further to do so.
The Disintegrator reduced the melee attacks of the opponent team. This helped my team greatly to last longer.
And the 'thorns' ability. Even though few of my cards missed their attacks, the 'thorns' ability continues to deal damage to the opponent team.
It was really an interesting battle and winning is always fun.
