As you probably already know the Battle Mage Secrets Weekly Challenge involves showcasing a battle involving a particular ruleset which is different every week. The ruleset we are to talk about this week is Equal Opportunity.

Let us see what this ruleset does before we get into the nitty-gritty of the line-up and the battle itself.

The Equal Opportunity ruleset is fairly straight-forward - All Monsters have the Opportunity (Monsters with the Opportunity ability may attack from any position and will target the enemy Monster with the lowest health) ability.

Now that we've got a good idea of what the Equal Opportunity ruleset practically does, let's see now how it can be effectively utilized.

There is not that much that could be misunderstood about this ruleset but I do have a few things to say:

In the first row of the screenshot above, I have listed all the Taunt Monsters currently available in the Modern meta. I love playing Taunt when the ruleset is Equal Opportunity whenever that's possible and makes sense since that gives me the opportunity to make the enemy team focus on a particular Monsters on my side of the field, while my Monsters are picking off the enemies one by one. Of course, that is not a recipe for success 100% of the time but it works more often than now.
In the 2nd row I have listed most of the Monsters with Double Stike, that's another group of combatants who are really potent when they have the Opportunity ability given to them, since they can inflict a ton of damage really quickly. They are a great addition to the Taunt Monsters from the first row.
In the 3rd row I have listed other Monsters which can be played very successfully with this ruleset - high Speed Monsters are very crucial, as well as Monsters with Bloodlust which can quickly snowball when picking off low-health enemy Monsters. Another very good play depending on the mana budget of the battle is positioning Monsters with Martyr next to Monsters with Camouflage or high attack/high health ones so you make your opponent kill them off first, buffing your remaining Monsters in the process. That can also result in a swift and decisive victory, depending, as usual, on if your opponent has any sort of adequate counter-measures in play.

Now that we have a decent understanding of the featured Ruleset and its potential advantages and disadvantages, let us have a look at the battle I have chosen to showcase.

  • The line-up of the Battle and the Ruleset:

The rulesets for this battle are Equal Opportunity, Equalizer (The initial Health of all Monsters is equal to that of the Monster on either team with the highest base Health) and Healed Out (All healing abilities are removed from Monsters and Summoners) ability. The mana budget is 56 which is about average so I will be able to splurge on chunkier Monsters. All Elements are available but Fire. I'll go with the Water Element. I need to note that since I did not get an Equal Opportunity battle on my main, this is a battle on my Silver/Gold alt, which I have MANUALLY played in Wild. No botting involved...

The 1st spot for this battle takes a Monster often used to take a hit or two by Sneak Monsters - the Torrent Fiend. It's a 0-cost Monster so it is very useful for any battle where you don't have any Mana left to allocate to more potent Monsters but you still have an open spot (or more). It also has an ability at level 4 - Headwinds (reduces the Ranged attack of all enemy Monsters). It can never hurt having as many de-buffs to cast on the enemy line-up as possible.

image.png

image.png

In the 2nd spot of the line-up I have one of my favorite tanks - the Diemonshark. Maxed out at level 8 it has Trample (when a Monster with Trample hits and kills its target, it will perform another attack on the next Monster on the enemy Team), Enrage (has increased Melee attack and Speed when damaged) and Retaliate (when hit with a Melee attack, Monsters with Retaliate have a chance of attacking their attacker).

image.png

Following immediately after is Arkemis the Bear. It is one of my favorite tanks overall because all 4 of his abilities are actually very good in cases of taking heavy damage and also mitigating enemy attacks - Protect (All friendly Monsters gain +2 Armor), Halving (Each time this Monster hits a target, the target's attack is cut in half (rounded down)), Forcefield (This Monster takes only 1 damage from attacks with power 5+) and last but not least in terms of damage output - Enrage (Has increased Melee attack and Speed when damaged).

The 4th spot goes to one of the newish soulbound reward Monsters - Coastal Sentry. It is one of the most oppressive Monsters in the set when used correctly with its abilities - Double Strike (Monster attacks twice each round) and Piercing (if Melee or Ranged attack damage is in excess of the target's Armor, the remainder will damage the target's Health). I currently have it at level 9 but at level 10 it also gains the Knock Out (does double damage when attacking an enemy that is stunned) ability. I normally use it the seconds spot when paired with Possibilus...

The 5th spot goes to the Drybone Raider. It is a cool Dual Attack Monsters with Double Strike which means that it hits not once, not twice, not three times but four times every round!. Maxed out at level 4 it has Double Strike (Monster attacks twice each round), Shatter (Target's armor is destroyed when hit by an attack from Monsters with Shatter) and finally Cripple (Each time an enemy is hit by a Monster with Cripple it loses one max health).

image.png

image.png

Last but not least is the Wave Brood. I have included it in the line-up so it could take a few hits from the enemy Monsters while I hopefully manage to take down some of their Monsters. We will see how that goes as we do have the Equalizer ruleset in play, so you never know how the battle will go as there are no clear targets for Opportunity apart as they are determined by the health totals which are initially all equal. At max level the Wave Brood has Taunt (All enemy Monsters target this Monster (if they are able to)), Close Range (Monsters with the Close Range ability can perform ranged attacks from the first position), Void (Reduced damage from Magic attacks) and Return Fire (When hit with a Ranged attack, Monsters with Return Fire will return reduced damage back to their attacker).

image.png
It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

The Summoner I am going with for the battle is the Pembrook Nymph. Well this is my very low budget alt account after all so hey, I've managed to get it to level 7 so I am doing what every other account with a decent amount of reward cards does - playing they hell out of the soulbound summoners. This allows me to play my level 9 Coastal Sentry at that level for instance, which is great since my alternative summoner is a level 4 Kelya. My opponent on the other hand has decided to go with a level 2 Immortalis and a couple of Wild Monsters I don't often play against. Let's see how this goes.

image.png

  • After 1 round of exchanging blows the enemy has taken down my Wave Brood but their Mycelic Slipspawn is also 1 hit away from dying. Its Forcefiled is playing tricks on my Coastal Sentry as usual.

image.png

  • Round 3 begins and I have lost my Torrent Fiend, however, I have managed to take down the enemy Arkemis the Bear.

image.png

  • Round 4 - my Diemonshark is about to die but so is the enemy Monsters in the tanking position.

image.png

  • Round 5 - all that's left for my team is to land the killing blow on the last enemy Monster standing.

Well this was definitely a fast but fun battle, and an entertaining way to showcase the Equal Opportunity ruleset. See you next week with another exciting post related to the brand new Battle Mage Secrets Weekly Challenge!
