Another week, another Battle Mage Secrets challenge. This time around I will be showcasing a battle featuring the Fire & Regret ruleset. The Albahoo Forester in the thumbnail is very fitting for the theme of the Challenge because of the ability it has starting from level 1 - Return Fire (When hit with a Ranged attack, Monsters with Return Fire will return reduced damage back to their attacker) .

Let us see what this ruleset does before we get into the nitty-gritty of the line-up and the battle itself.

The Fire & Regret ruleset is very straight-forward - All Monsters have the Return Fire ability.

Now that we've got a good idea of what Fire & Regret ruleset practically does, let's see now how it can be effectively utilized.

image.png

Since the point of this ruleset is to effectively limit the use of Ranged Attackers since no ones really wants to take any unneeded damage unless absolutely necessary, I have listed a few important aspects when it comes to the ruleset in terms of cards. In the first row you can see the Ranged Attackers available for Modern play which also have Reflection Shield (This Monster doesn't take damage from Blast, Magic Reflect, Thorns, or Return Fire) at max level. Reflection Shield completely mitigates the effects of Return Fire on the attacking Monsters so it cannot get any better than that.
In the second row you can see some of the Monster which have Amplify (Increases Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns damage to all enemy monsters by 1). The point of playing a Monster with Amplify is to boost the damage the enemy Ranged Attackers would potentially take. Of course, the enemy might not play any Ranged Monsters but if they do, they will not like the outcome of that for sure.
In the 3rd row I have listed some useful summoners for this ruleset. Reklah can provide 2 Reflection Shields to two friendly Monsters which can be really beneficial as we have already discussed. Immortalis prepares you to resist heavier Magic Damage since if the enemy avoids playing Ranged Monsters, they will most likely pivot to either a Melee-heavy line-up or a Magic-heavy one. Lastly, Grandmaster Rathe - he provides Amplify and +1 Armor. The benefits are also obvious.

Now that we have a decent understanding of the featured Ruleset and its potential advantages and disadvantages, let us have a look at the battle I have chosen to showcase.

  • The line-up of the Battle and the Ruleset:

The rulesets for this battle are Fab Five (Up to Five Units can be used), Fire & Regret (All Monsters have the Return Fire ability) and Going the Distance (Only Monsters with Ranged attack may be used in battles). The mana budget is 28 which is below average in terms of mana so it does not give me the ability to play whatever combinations of Monsters I want. All Elements are available. I have decided to give the Dragon Element a shot this time around, with Water as a sub-element. It is a ladder battle from earlier today.

The tanking spot in the line-up is for the Angelic Mandarin. You will probably almost never see it in this spot but I figure out it is the best spot for it in this battle because I want it to survive as much as possible so it can heal the backline. It has Triage (heals the friendly back-line Monster that has taken the most damage) and Silence (reduces the Magic Attack of all enemy Monsters). Triage could be huge for healing the backline, and Silence is also great whenever you expect you opponent to play Magic attackers.

The off-tank for the line-up is Endura Brune. She is a Legendary Monster. At level 1 she has 2 Ranged Attack, 3 Speed, 2 Armor and 10 Health and also starts off with the Amplify (Increases Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns damage to all enemy monsters by 1) ability. At level 2 she gains another nice ability - Silence (Reduces the Magic Attack of all enemy Monsters). At level 3 she gains 1 more Speed point for a total of 4 and one more ability - Headwinds (Reduces the Ranged attack of all enemy Monsters). Finally, maxed out at level 4 she has 2 Ranged Attack, 4 Speed, 2 Armor and 10 Health. She also gains her final ability, for a total of 4, Swiftness (All friendly Monsters have increased Speed).

Following immediately after is one of the most used soulbound cards - the Venari Marksrat. I am interested in its main ability - Martyr (When this Monster dies, adjacent Monsters get +1 to all stats). It's place is obvious - in the middle of the pack so if it dies - it can buff the Monsters adjacent to it. It has only 4 health (at level 3) so that's generally not too hard to happen, especially in a battle such as this where it will be receiving damage every time it fires and lands a shot on an enemy.

Last but not least is the Wave Brood. I have included it in the line-up so it could take a few hits from the enemy Monsters while I hopefully manage to take down some of their Monsters. At max level the Wave Brood has Taunt (All enemy Monsters target this Monster (if they are able to)), Close Range (Monsters with the Close Range ability can perform ranged attacks from the first position), Void (Reduced damage from Magic attacks) and Return Fire (When hit with a Ranged attack, Monsters with Return Fire will return reduced damage back to their attacker).

It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

The Summoner I am going with for the battle is Quix since he debuffs the enemy team by reducing their Ranged Attack by 1 and Speed by 1 as well. He is generally a good choice for this combination of rulesets. My enemy, on the other hand, has chosen the Astral Entity. Their line-up seems better than mine at first sight. Let's see how this goes.

image.png

After 1 Round there have been no casualties on the battlefield for either side but that definitely will not last long..

image.png

Round 3 - There are a few Monsters on the verge of dying so this round will be action-packed for sure.

image.png

Round 4 is about to begin, as you can see both sides have suffered losses. I've lost my Wave Brood while they enemy has lost their Soul Strangler, Weirding Warrior, Ravenhood Warden.

image.png

Round 5 - Well now it's his maxed Queen of Crows versus my remaining three Monsters.

image.png

Round 6 - The battle continues but the amplified Return Fire will do the job for me.

image.png

Round 7 - All that's left for the game to end is for his Queen of Crows to shoot at my Endura Brune and end this battle.

Well this was definitely a fast but fun battle, and an entertaining way to showcase the Fire & Regret ruleset. See you next week with another exciting post related to the brand new Battle Mage Secrets Weekly Challenge!
