Splinterlands Social Media Challenge: Back to the Basics using monsters with high base stats

in Splinterlands13 hours ago

Splinterlands is a pretty complicated game with interesting battles, with all the options available. This is a part of the weekly social media challenge for Splinterlands. This week is about a great fight where I won because I used monsters with abilities that hurt my own team normally.

Featured Ruleset

The ruleset that I am going to talk about is Back to the Basics, and the info above on rulesets can be found here. In this ruleset, all monsters lose all of their abilities, but archon/summoners still give effects.

There are two ways to improve your chances at this fight: use a summoner that gives you a level or ability advantage over your opponent, and use monsters with high base stats (even if they have bad abilities such as reckless or electrify). After all, summoners/archons maintain their ability, and all abilities are removed.

Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The ruleset this time is Back to the Basics. There is also 25 mana available, and I can use fire, water, life, or deathsplinter.

SplinterMana CostPositionReason
Marlai Singariel6Summoner+1 Magic
Runic Skychonk51st
Water Diviner22nd
Chaos Adjutant53rd
Argarux Magus34th
Shock Trooper45th
Total Mana:25

I use Marlai Singariel as my summoner for the +1 magic damage. I just use 5 different magic monsters to with the lower damage and high health ones up front. Shock Trooper is

The plan is to kill my opponent before he kills me. All of the high-health and low-magic attack monsters are up there to give my Shock Trooper more time to deal damage. My opponent will have to take them out first before they can get to my Shock Trooper. The only thing that I am worried about is the slow speed that most magic monsters have, so I hope my opponent doesn't come with a fast magic build as my cards won't last long. There isn't very much mana in this fight, so I am limited in my choices, and I went for lower mana cards with bad abilities. In this fight, I use both of the ways that I mentioned: summoner (+1 magic) and good base stat monsters (with bad abilities).

Round 1

round 1.png
At first glance, I think that I have the advantage, but I could still lose. I am worried about the life leech that my opponent has, but in terms of damage, I have more than my opponent. So it will just depend on whether or not I can deal enough damage fast enough.

Round 3

round 3.png
A round later, both of us have lost 1 monster, but I have the numbers advantage over my opponent. There isn't much my opponent can do because my magic monsters can't miss, and I have the absolute advantage in terms of damage. Once that first monster dies, my opponent will be left with just a ranged monster that can't attack.

I ended up winning this match later that round as I expected.

Conclusion

The battle this time did play out as I planned. I mentioned two ways to improve my chances in the back to the basic fights, and I used them both. First off, I had my summoner increase my magic damage, and it improved my base damage by 5 damage per turn because I used 5 magic monsters. Then I also used quite a few monsters with reckless and electrify, as they have better base stats in exchange for those bad abilities. For example, Shocktrooper was a huge part of my damage, but he didn't have to suffer from the extra damage every turn.

You can see my entire match here.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.

‘Back to the Basics’ can be tricky, but your focus on strong summoners and high stat monsters makes total sense. Interesting to see how strategy still shines even without abilities.

@jfang003 The 'Back to the Basics' match was really great, it was great to see how beautifully they pulled off the victory by just choosing the base stats and the right summoner.
