šŸŽ Opening 150 Foundation Packs in Splinterlands: Was It Really Worth It?

in Splinterlands • last month

Since my return to Splinterlands, one of the things I’ve been most excited about is opening packs again. Back in the day, I didn’t always have the chance to stockpile them, but this time I decided to save up.

Over the course of grinding in the Gold League and collecting daily rewards, I managed to accumulate 150 Foundation Packs. Instead of selling them right away, I chose to rip them open all at once.

Opening packs is always a gamble—sometimes you hit the jackpot, sometimes you’re left thinking you should’ve sold. Here’s how my opening went, what I pulled, and the tough question I’m now asking myself: was it really worth it?

What I Pulled From 150 Packs?

Let’s start with the good part—what was inside!

Commons & Rares: As expected, most of my pulls were Commons and Rares. The bright side is that I also got several Gold Foil Commons and Rares, which are always nice for collection power and potential renting value.

Epics: I was lucky enough to pull a bunch of Epic cards, which is always a great boost. Epics are especially useful for strengthening my lineup since I’m still climbing my way back into competitive play.

Legendaries: A few Legendary cards popped up as well, which always feels rewarding. Unfortunately, one card completely escaped me: the Mystic Scaleweaver. Out of 150 packs, I didn’t get a single copy—which stung a little.

Overall, I’d say the opening was decent, but not game-changing.

Now, here’s where things get a bit more serious. I wanted to check the market value of what I opened compared to what the packs themselves could have sold for.

Here’s the breakdown:

p3.png

šŸ“¦ First 50 packs = $9.29 USD (market value of cards)

p2.png

šŸ“¦ Second 50 packs = $10.99 USD

p1.png

šŸ“¦ Third 50 packs = $13.16 USD

šŸ’µ Total = $33.44 USD

But if I had sold those 150 packs directly on the market instead of opening them, I could’ve earned around $45 USD.

That’s a difference of roughly $11.55—which means, financially speaking, I would have been better off selling the packs instead of opening them.

Why I Opened Anyway?

So, if selling the packs would have given me more value, why did I still open them?

Simple: I need cards.

Since I returned to Splinterlands after a long break, I don’t have the strongest deck. Opening packs gave me a bigger card pool to combine, strengthen, and experiment with. For example, leveling up Commons and Rares can make a huge difference in Bronze and Silver, especially with stat boosts like extra speed or health.

Plus, there’s the fun factor. Opening packs is exciting—it feels like a mini lottery every time you click ā€œReveal All.ā€ Even if I lost some potential profit, I gained more variety and utility for my deck.

Here is The Big Question: Sell or Open? šŸ¤”

This experience made me wonder: what’s the smarter move in Splinterlands—opening packs for collection growth, or selling them for maximum profit?

Selling packs gives you:

Immediate DEC/SPS or credits to use on rentals or specific card purchases

Less risk, since card values fluctuate while sealed packs tend to hold steady demand

Opening packs gives you:

Card collection growth (more options to build or combine)

Chance at huge pulls like Legendaries or Gold Foils

Fun and excitement, which is part of why we play

Both paths have their pros and cons, and I think it really depends on whether your goal is short-term profit or long-term deck building.

What Do You Think?

I’m curious to hear from other Splinterlands players:

Do you open your packs or sell them?

Have you ever had a pull that made opening totally worth it?

Is it smarter for someone like me—still building back my deck—to keep opening, or should I focus on selling for DEC/SPS?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Opening 150 Foundation Packs was a blast, and while the numbers show I ā€œlostā€ about $11.55 in potential value, I gained a lot of cards that will help me progress in the game. At the end of the day, Splinterlands is about both fun and strategy—and I think opening these packs gave me a bit of both.

Still, the question lingers: was it really worth it?
