BATTLE MAGE SECRETS : COUNTERSPELL

image.png

Counterspell is the counterpart ruleset to Briar Patch and Fire & Regret, which applies for magic attacks. This ruleset could bring a different dynamic to battle compared to the two latter. Magic attack has always run as a black horse strategy because of its capability to bypass armor. While magic attacks will face returned damage, players will incline to use melee and ranged cards instead. This in turn make cards with Protect, Shield, and Retaliate become a preferred choice. So lets see how this ruleset will work in battle.

Pros & Cons

Pros.png
Cons.png
1. Players with vast collection of melee and ranged cards will benefit from this battle. In contrary having powerful magic cards will bring less advantagous position; except of course if the magic cards possessed Reflection Shield.
1. The fact that Counterspell return damage are calculated by attack value divided by 2 and rounded up create a continous leverage the greater the incoming damage.
2. Players might still set up formation using powerful magic cards relying on Reflection Shield to null the return damage. Reklah will be a great choice for its double Reflection Shield deployable to any cards in the formation.

The battle has a maximum 32 mana cap, with Even Stevens and Counterspell as the rulesets; while all Splinters are made available except for Death and Dragon Splinters.

This is just another bad day for my battle. I decided to go with Kelya Frendul to gain its speed and extra armor. Then I go with a Chaos Rear Guard to hold the frontline. This card has been my favourite one mainly due to its huge health and armor and Shield ability. Its an equal to Antoid Platoon from Fire Splinter. Next I go with a range of melee cards, from Demented Shark, Deeplurker, and then Feasting Seaweed. All of these cards will gain damage boost and I expect to deliver the needed blow. To further propel damage output, I decided to deploy Mar Torren Seeker and Kulu Swimhunter, all are 2 damage ranged cards costing only 4 mana.

My opponent go with General Sloan which reflected with its 3 ranged cards being deployed. The frontline are hold by Pelacor Conjurer and Chaos Knight. Then the rear squad consist of Supply Runner, Venari Crystalsmith, Time Mage, and Pelacor Arbalest. Pelacor Arbalest was there exposed freely in the backrow, but unfortunately I didn't bring any Sneak attack.

Chaos Rear Guard really running the business here. The incoming damage from all the ranged cards are absorbed like nothing; though unfortunately Pelacor Arbalest got the rounded up 2 damage which deal quite damage. Deeplurker managed to steal the show by drawing first blood into Time Mage. This allow my formation to restore to its intial speed. The battle continue to nothing as Chaos Rear Guard and Feasting Seaweed missed their attack on Pelacor Conjurer.

image.png

Mar Torrent seeker open the battle with a soli damage to Supply Runner but not enough to stop it from dealing deathblow into Chaos Rear Guard. Deeplurker finish the job by scoring the second kill on Supply Runner. Venari Crystalsmith cast heal into Pelacor Conjurer. Suddenly my formation start to lose momentum when Pelacor Arbalest dealt 3 damage times 2 into Demented Shark.

image.png

Mar Torrent Seeker again dealt a close damage into Venari Crystalsmith leaving it with 1 health remaining and giving chances to heal Pelacor Conjurer. Again Pelacor Conjurer made an excellent peformance by evading damage from Deeplurker and Feasting Seaweed.

image.png

The 3rd round start with the tide run into my side, as Mar Torrent Seeker and Deeplurker both score a kill; leaving my opponent with Chaos Knight and Pelacor Arbalest. But this isn't a wholly good news, considering that now Chaos Knight in the front-row will got chances to strike out. The bad new come quickly as Pelacor Arbalest and Chaos Knight both perform double kill into Deeplurker and Feasting Seaweed.

image.png

Dodge and speed become a vital advantage for Mar Torrent Seeker. It managed to avoid the entire damage coming from this round. But with Chaos Knight possessing Shield, Kulu Swimhunter didn't have enough damage output to quickly bring down Chaos Knight.

image.png

I got lucky enoguh to survive into the 9th round. Kulu Swimhunter displace another hit to left Chaos Knight with 1 health remaining. Mar Torrent Seeker need to hold from 3 attack just for Kulu Swimhunter to deal the finishing blow on the next round. Unfortunately Mar Torrent sustain damage from Chaos Knight, and though it managed to avoid the 1st damage of Pelacor Arbalest, the 2nd damage hit and put it into demise. And so thats the end of my battle.

CONCLUSION

I felt this battle is a rare and close one. Both formation seemed to found advatange and disadvantage. My formation lucky enought to survive between 6th round to 9th roudn. My opponent displace a great amount of damage and frequency thorughout the battle while left untouched. Unfortunately both of us are clever enough to avoid using magic cards in this battle.
