Hi everyone! The Legendary Canary is an account dedicated to renting out Splinterlands cards for fun and mutual profit. I earn a little bit on the side, and you get decent cards to compete for a fraction of the price. It's my way of having fun with Splinterlands. Sometimes I enjoy the process of acquiring and renting out cards more than the game itself. But I can appreciate that it is not for everyone! Some find it slow and tedious. The rewards are small, especially compared to what some people are used to in the crypto world. To be honest, that suits me just fine.
The Legendary Canary has been operating for a few months now. It is a hobby that arose partly because I don't have the time or interest to play enough in the more rewarding ranked games or tournaments. But also because there's just something appealing about slowly building up a collection over time to lend to other people, being disciplined about purchases and doing the research to find opportunities in the market. It's like watching a garden grow. Again, definitely not for everyone.
Like a real canary, this account is quite small. I am no whale!! There are much bigger and much richer card rental 'shops' on Splinterlands right now. I suppose any one of them could go a long way to tanking the rental market if they really wanted to. We can all only hope that there is a place in the rental market for all of us to play, and that the market grows over time. If not, that's OK too and we can move on to something else. But for now, it's a fun place to be.

That said, it's tough to operate in a market that deals with fractions of a cent, is super price-sensitive and has some seriously big accounts roaming around. Furthermore there's the risk that competitors troll me by renting & playing a card for a day or two then putting it back on the market, leaving me stuck with a 7 day cooldown! And never mind the existential risk of the game itself - everything could flop with a few bad decisions here or there.
But despite all that, I still think there is opportunity and fun to be had. There's not too many people playing in the rental space, and most people have not abused the lack of escrow or minimum contract length that I put on most of my cards (thank you by the way).
Going forward, I hope to share more thoughts and reflections once every Splinterlands season, give a shoutout to my current customers and (of course) shill for myself.
