Tough Rule Set Combinations

We all have those nasty rule set combinations sometimes, Ranged Only with Return Fire, Magic Only and Counter Spell... It makes choosing our teams hard but like always it's the player who can make the best team with these limitations, plus the options their deck provides them wins the battle.

Some rule sets are harder than others but this season I feel like most battles are hard no matter the rule sets because there are so many higher level players out there, for this post I'd like to share a battle with one of those tough rule set combinations... Melee Only and Everyone has the Shield ability!

I guess it's not as bad as Melee Only with Thorns, which is alright as long as the Water splinter is allowed because Commander Slade excels in this, but this was something to think about as well.

Sharing a battle

So this battle had the Fire, Earth and Life splinters open to be chosen from with a Melee Only / Now You See Me / Thick Skinned rule set combination and 41 mana.

Without the option to use Cryptic and just use the Expose ability to remove the Shield ability on the other team, the only other way was to just use as much damage as I could, and I had the perfect Archon for that, one that I don't use a lot but for this match it was perfect!

First look at the battlefield:

Well prior to the battle I was a little intimidated by another max level opponent but it's not as bad as I thought, although the Archon is max, most cards are not, the only card that's really strong is that tank Drybone Megalodon.

My Line-Up:

  • Archon: Underboss Fabino - reason: Melee Specialist, +2 melee damage to two units.
  • First position: Mantaroth - reason: Good tank!
  • Second position: Taye Loreswift - reason: +1 melee damage to my team.
  • Third position: Halaran Huntress - reason: Fast, good damage with charge and cheap on mana.
  • Fourth position: Venka the Vile - reason: High damage with Charge and Piercing.
  • Fifth position: Buttercup Mauler - reason: Good Sneak unit with good damage.
  • Sixth position: Thanalorian Blade - reason: Opportunity with Execute.

The Battle:

Round 1: Not a lot has happened yet with all that shield, but my team is doing a lot more damage, two of the enemy units are only at 1 damage, doing nothing at all. That Dispel is bad, it removed Inspire from my Mantaroth.

Round 2: Yeah that Grove Doomblade does a lot of damage but it's SO slow it missed a lot, good thing! Two down... this is looking good!

Round 3: O suddenly things are going fast and my entire team is still here!

image.png

Round 4: And it's over, it's a win with my entire team alive!
