Documenting my Splinterlands Knowledge - Ambush and Updated Weapons Training

Hello there.

In my older Rebellion post, I discussed four new abilities that were being introduced in Rebellion. These were Armored Strike, Corrosive Ward, Flank, and Look Out. Back then, those four abilities were the only ones announced. It was still early on in the presale when I wrote that, and there have been some changes and add-ons since. One of them was the change in the image used for Corrosive Ward. Back then, it was colored green. I think players were confused between it and the Poison ability, which led to the current image.

Apart from this, they also added a new ability, Ambush. Monsters with Ambush get a special round of their own, "Round Zero", where they are able to perform an attack before monsters without the Ambush ability. The regular hit and miss calculations still apply. If there are multiple monsters with the Ambush ability, their order of attack follows the regular attack order calculations; Speed, Attack Type, Rarity, Level.

Having played a good amount of Modern Ranked battles, Ambush has taken me by surprise a number of times. There are currently only 5 monsters with Ambush, but the Legendary Dragon Summoner Akane can grant 2 monsters with Ambush. There are some strategies where they field an Ambush team, and they are able to take out a few monsters before the battle even begins. There are other tactics like putting Ambush on a Double Strike monster, and have them attack with double strike on round 0.

With the addition of Ambush, they tweaked Look Out a bit to also counter Ambush. If you have a monster with Look Out on your team, all your monsters take half damage from Ambush attacks. It is pretty interesting how a single Look Out can counter a whole strategy, and it is also useful against Sneak, Snipe, and Opportunity attacks.

With the release of Rebellion, the team also decided to buff the Weapons Training ability. Previously, the adjacent monsters with no attacks gain 1/2 of the Weapon Training monster's attack, rounded up. The no-attack monsters also lose their Weapons Training attack once the Weapons Training monster dies. Lastly, the Weapons Training buff can be cleansed.

But after Rebellion came out, a lot of changes were implemented. The adjacent units with no attack gain the Weapon Training monster's full attack, up to a max of 3. When the Weapons Training monster dies, that attack placed on the no attack monsters stay. A no attack monster can get two Weapons Training buffs if it is beside two Weapons Trainer, and if the attack type are different. If they are the same, then the highest damage will apply. Lastly, Weapons Training can no longer be Dispelled.

This can result in a lot of powerful combinations. I think this Weapons Training change has really shifted the meta a lot. With this buff, Zyriel turned from a very niche monster, into an almost must own/rent. There are a lot of Taunt + Support teams, and Zyriel is the backbone of it. Agor/Bera Dallin + Zyriel + Scavo Hireling + Pelacor Conjurer + Aves Sturgis/Skok Duskblight are common strategies, and you can mix and match them multiple ways.

And that isn't the only Weapons Training strategy. There is also a very popular one for Obsidian. Lurking Puffer + Moxian Rebel + Chaos Agent is a strong but low cost team. For just 11 mana, you are able to deal 6 damage. There are other strategies available, and some existing ones that got better. The Kulu Mastermind + Noa just got a lot better.

The Modern Ranked rotation is still recent, and there are bound to be more strategies to pop up. The upcoming Legendary Summoners should definitely shake up the meta every time a new one releases. Currently, the Agor Zyriel support team seems to be the top team in Bronze. But after that, the meta is still fresh and there are counters to each team. It is really fun to play ranked when the meta hasn't set it yet.

That is it for my Ambush and Weapons Training update post. I also included a bit of meta update at the end there. I plan on going through the Rebellion monsters and sharing my thoughts on them, since I have played a good amount of games with and against them. Don't hesitate to let me know what you think, and if you have suggestions for improvement.
