Splinterlands Rebellion Update 4: General Sale and Teaser Discussion

Hello there.

The Rebellion presale has ended and the general sale is upon us. The rest of the 9.5 million Rebellion packs will be up for sale for everyone. The team has included the burning of packs and it will be implemented from day 1. The daily minimum packs that need to be distributed is 25k. If there are less than 25k packs bought/distributed, 90 percent of the remainder will be burned, and the 10 percent will be given to the DAO account. For example, if 15k packs were bought and 10k packs were left at the end of the day, 9k packs will be burned, and 1k packs will be given to the DAO. This will happen everyday, and ensures that the Rebellion sale has a finite ending; around 1 year later.

Together with the general sale, the battle for the airdrops will also begin soon after. I explained the new airdrop system back in Update 2. Depending on how soon the Airdrop Conflicts start, it is interesting to see how much packs people buy at the start of the sale.

Another reason why players might buy a lot of packs on day 1, is the rotation of the Modern Ranked cards. Once Rebellion is available, the Untamed set [Core, Dice, Rewards, Promo] cards will rotate out of Modern Ranked, and can only be playable in the Wild format. Players will be provided with the common and rare starter cards, which will give penalties when used. So without buying the packs or getting the cards from the secondary market [which will be priced at a premium because of supply and demand], players will either play with only half of the available cards, or have to use underleveled cards that also give a penalty.

Since my last update, the team has released a few more card reveals. I will try to go over them and share my initial thoughts on how they will affect the Bronze meta, and the game as a whole.

The first card is Ulundin Overseer. It is a Common Neutral card with the Flank ability. Even for Bronze, this card has insanely high HP and armor. Imagine this with Rathe, or in a weak magic/resurrect ruleset and it is very difficult to kill. With a base 12 HP, it will be healed for 4 HP which can be a lot of sustain. This is a very easy Weapons training target, and being neutral, it is available for all. I think this is a must have even at level 1. It can be a big tank in no melee rulesets, and the Flank can enable a lot of interesting strategies. Grund and Coastal Sentry immediately come to mind, Kulu Mastermind can give it an attack, there are just a lot of possibilities for it.

The next card is Pirate of Eight. It is a Rare Water card. I am a bit conflicted with this card. Water already has the Tide Biter for low mana Reach. At max Bronze, Tide Biter has 2 attack compared to Pirate's 1. At higher mana, Tide Biter's Reflection shield counters the Blast. The Blast is really good though. It has the potential of dealing a lot of damage and countering support oriented teams. For now, I don't think it is a must have, but it has its niche. I'll have to wait how the meta shapes up before buying it. It can be good in Equal Opportunity, Super Sneak, and maybe Equalizer.

The next card is Croire. It is an Epic Earth card with Flank. I think this is one of the perfect combos with Ulundin. It grants Ulundin attack, and it gets Reach. It can then grant melee attack and Reach to the monster behind it as well. The 1 Melee attack in Bronze is a bit underwhelming, but imagine Thane behind it and it isn't so bad anymore. The Chaos Legion cards of Earth are mostly focused on Magic and Range [Obsidian, Immortalis, Fernheart, Ava], but with this, they are adding more viable team compositions for Melee. Without seeing the meta, I don't think this is a must have yet, but it definitely opens up a lot of other possibilities for Earth.

The next card is Chaos Golem. It is a Legendary Fire card. For the Bronze level, I think it is underwhelming for a Legendary card. 9 mana, 3 attack and speed, 4 armor, 10 HP, and just Return Fire. If it were to go 1v1 with the Forgotten One, I think the Forgotten one is favored. Return Fire is very weird to have for this card, and I think Shield would have been better, since Living Lava is rotating out. For the max level, I don't think it is strong either. One commenter in the teaser post compared it to the Drybone Barbarian.

Honestly, I can see it. Same mana cost and both have Enrage and Retaliate. The Armor makes Chaos Golem better, but it seems that is the only advantage it has. For a legendary, I think this might be one of the weaker ones and I'll probably skip over this.

For this group of cards, I think Ulundin is a must have, while Pirate and Croire are good but have their own niche where they can work. Chaos Golem is almost unplayable in Bronze, but can maybe find its niche at max level.

That is it for my Rebellion update post. We have less than 1 week before Rebellion becomes available, and I am very excited. I'll probably buy the single cards instead of packs since I have horrible luck. I'll probably post an early meta update for next week's social media challenge. Don't hesitate to let me know what you think, and if you have suggestions for improvement.
