A Play-to-Earn (P2E) Blockchain Soccer-Based Game!

After reading the announcement about the partnership between the Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) and Splinterlands last 08 August, I thought what’s going on with my favorite card game?

I got curious to know what is this MLSPA. Since soccer is not my type of game, it is just normal that I am clueless about the existence of this organization. Reading the relevant article, I later came to know that this association is the “labor union and exclusive bargaining representative for all Major League Soccer (MLS) players” established in 2003. It is managed by the players themselves and “serves to promote players' collective best interests, amplify their voices, and represent them in their group commercial and licensing activities.”

Reading such information, though I am not a fan of soccer games, my instinct tells me that this new venture entered by Splinterlands is something big.

Yes, blockchain has diverse possible applications and offers many opportunities, but I never expect that Splinterlands will enter this early in this type of partnership in creating a play-to-earn (P2E) blockchain soccer-based game! This shows that the Splinterlands team is really tireless when it comes to promoting the game and adding value to its players and token holders.

What I find interesting in this new game is the source of characters. Unlike in Splinterlands, where the characters are from different “splinters” such as earth, water, fire, life, dragon, and death with different rarities, the characters in this blockchain soccer-based game will come from MLSPA players themselves. Those tasked to develop this will create “fictional in-game card formats” to represent these real-world soccer players.

Another interesting aspect of this landmark game is the process of how the game developers will design its mechanics. It was noted that “points and wins will be tallied in a variety of ways based on in-game events and numerous player statistics, mimicking real-world soccer performance in a digestible, digital format.” We will see how this thing will unfold in the coming weeks and months.

Moreover, I do believe that in this partnership, both Splinterlans and MLSPA players will benefit. On the part of MLSPA, they are looking for avenues to connect their players to their fan base in a creative and tech-savvy way. Achieving this goal, they find Splinterlands, a “fantasy-themed collectible card game” company a great partner at the cutting edge of innovation that is happening now in financial technology.

As for Dr. Jesse “Aggroed” Reich, he recognized the great opportunity this partnership can bring to both parties. And not only that, all those who are actively involved in this industry such as soccer players, fans, and gamers will certainly benefit. This remarkable innovation in the sports industry can be considered a significant historical milestone. Dr. Reich, the co-founder, and CEO of Splinterlands is very excited about this ground-breaking achievement. He anticipates great things to come from the intersection of “sports, gaming, crypto, NFTs, DeFi, and blockchain technology.”

Grace and peace!
