Sometimes a Team that is Not Maxed Out is Better than a Maxed Out Team

in Splinterlands15 hours ago

What I love about Splinterlands is sometimes a team that is not fully maxed out defeats a team composed of the fully maxed out and more expensive monsters. It is all about building a perfect team for the ruleset combination. Today I would like to share a battle that illustrates this scenario at Modern Champion 2.

The Ruleset

Here we have a dual ruleset of Four's a Crowd where you can summon a maximum of four units and Reverse Speed ruleset where the slowest monsters attack first.

We also have sixty five mana available and Life and Fire splinters in play. Sixty five mana and four slots is a real high mana battle where you can play units without really thinking about mana.

When i see Reverse Speed ruleset I naturally think of Fire as it has Grove Doomblade which is a great monster for Reverse speed, but a counter to this Arcana Reward card comes in the form of Eternal Tofu summoner which gives thorns and extra two health points. So I went with a counter.

The Strategy

The strategy here is two-fold: First I want to spread the damage from the opponent to two targets: a resilient taunt monster in the form of Bellowmancer that is resilient to ranged and melee attacks as well as the magic attacks due to his void armor ability as well as the main tank in the form of Dar 'Gottem' Gearnut that has a great health and armor and is being healed by the Calabash Sage.

While the opponent is getting damage from thorns and is busy attacking two very solid defensive monsters my other two monsters are doing their damage with a four ranged attack from a Calabash Sage and three magic attack from Mystic Mudbinder that also caries a solid punch in the form of Armored Strike ability.

The Battle

Link to the Battle

In the first round Killians-Wrath piloted by the Mario08 scholar did manage to take out my taunt monster, but in the process his Grove Doomblade sustained some major damage loosing his shield and six out of eight health.

Most of his team is looking pretty good still, lets see what the second round will bring...

In the second round our Calabash Sage got dangerously close to being taken out and it got stunned by Grove Doomblade, but the thorns from the Calabash Sage did take out Grove Doomblade finally taking out this really dangerous monster card from the battlefield.

In the third round a lucky magic damage shot from their Gramel the Hunger took out our Calabash Sage which means we loose a very valuable tank heal.

The battle is very close at the start of the fourth round and either side can still prevail!

At the start of round Five two monsters go toe to toe in this one on one battle of Mystic Mudbinder and Gramel the Hunger. My bet is on my Mystic Mudbinder as he has a self heal and Gramel the Hunger just doesn't have enough damage in my opinion.

And finally in round seven Mystic Mudbinder outlasts the Gramel the Hunger.

Conclusion

As you can see in this battle I had a level one SPS Promo card Dar 'Gottem' Gearnut legendary card and a level seven out of ten common card: Calabash Sage, but these two cards performed great against a maxed out deck at a Modern Champion 1 / Champion 2 level.

Sometimes you have to look at what each card brings to the table even if it is not maxed out.

And here we defeated a higher ranked scholar piloted account featuring a fully maxed out and more expensive team.
