Splinter Royale - New Feature: Ranking

spr_thumbnail_ranking.png

Greetings.

First and foremost, we want to express our gratitude for the kind support and valuable feedback you've provided.

Since our Alpha release, we've tirelessly worked on enhancing the Game Engine, strengthening our infrastructure, rectifying bugs, and introducing new features. This post will shed light on one such feature.

Ranking

What's the essence of a game if you can't boast about your victories or demonstrate your gaming skills? Hence, we've added a ranking system.

Now, when you delve into a game of Splinter Royale, you'll start with a default rating of 100. This rating will fluctuate based on your match placements.

Currently, as Splinter Royale is tailored for 1v1 matches, you'll either gain rating points by winning or lose some upon defeat.

How does it work?

This section delves a bit into game theory, so please bear with us.

Many games incorporate a ranking system, with most utilizing systems like ELO (e.g. Chess) or Glicko. These are predominantly oriented for 1v1 scenarios. However, several algorithms cater to multiplayer games. For Splinter Royale, we assessed various options and settled on Open Skill.

Open Skill (OS) is an open-source variant of True Skill (TS), the latter being developed by Microsoft for Xbox.

An advantage of OS/TS is their inherent support for multiplayer games. Given that Splinter Royale's vision encompasses matches with more than two participants, say, 5 or 8 players in a Free For All (FFA), this system aligns perfectly.

Example

Every player initiates their journey with a rating of 100. Your gained or lost points depend on your placement relative to the total number of players.

Bob has 100 rating.
Alive has 100 rating
Bob secures the 1st position and receives +14 rating points.
Alice finishes 2nd and loses -7 rating points.

Bob gained +14 rating points

Alice lost -7 rating points

Rewards

As a part of the crypto community, we're fully aware that players seek out rewards. However, we chose not to release tokens that could face swift dilution.

Recognising the importance of incentivising players, we've so far implemented rankings and ratings. And we have more exciting stuff in the pipeline.

What's next?

Work. work.

On a more serious note: We aim for enhanced gameplay, rectifying more bugs, and rolling out a comprehensive roadmap.

Stay tuned for more updates!
