I believe that we all want to live in a strong and valuable community, but I don't think that most of us act in a way that builds them.

Self-interest always comes first.
As it should - but if immediate self-interest is going to cost more down the road than the gain now, what is actually in self-interest?
It might be a hinder against bulding a community in fact.
