After acquiring cards through draws and various other methods, the next phase of deck-building involves leveling them up to equip them with new and superior powers. For now, I am not focusing on "unbinding" them, because combining an unbound copy with a soulbound copy results in the final version becoming fully soulbound again. I made this mistake early on, so my current priority is upgrading the cards to their maximum or most useful levels; once that is done, I will begin the unbinding process. Thanks to the cards obtained from the rare draws I purchased yesterday, two of my rare magic cards are now ready to be upgraded to Level 3.
The first Magic card here is the Fire element's "Withered Old Sage," a card with a mana cost of 6. Its stats relative to that cost place it in the category of weaker cards; with only 1 Armor and 2 Health, it becomes an easy target for the enemy—especially if the opposing team includes cards with the "Opportunity" ability. Although upgrading it to Level 2 added the "Void" ability—providing 50% protection against magic attacks—that protection was limited to magic damage, and its Health remained quite low. However, the upgrade to Level 3 has somewhat addressed this issue, as it now possesses one additional Health point. While not a massive improvement, every extra point matters, making it a more viable choice to summon in battle.
The second magic card I upgraded to Level 3 today is the Water element's 'Torrent Sniper'. I always liked this card even at Level 1, but it became even more attractive after gaining +1 Magic Power at Level 2; its other stats—especially armor and health—are quite decent, providing good resilience against enemy attacks. Combined with the 'Snipe' ability (which specifically targets first non-melee card in the lineup), it was already a great card at Level 2. Now, the new 'Painforge' ability added at Level 3 makes it truly special; while it doesn't provide an immediate raw power boost, strategically, you can pair it with cards possessing 'Reckless', 'Electrified', or 'Incendiary' abilities to make it increasingly powerful with every instance of damage taken.
Just two days ago, I upgraded my first Legendary card—also from the Water element—to Level 2, gaining the 'Reckless' ability, which deals 'True Damage' to an adjacent allied card after every successful attack. Imagine placing this 'Painforge' card alongside that 'Reckless' card: the Torrent Sniper would boost its own attack power by +1 every round thanks to 'Painforge'—isn't that an exciting strategy? You can create this same synergy by pairing 'Painforge' with the 'Shock Trooper's' 'Electrified' ability as well.
Splinterlands isn't an easy place, but that's what makes it even more fun. A perfect strategy takes into account many factors, including stats, abilities, rulesets, mana caps, and more. That's why it's even more important to consider all these factors when developing a strategy.
