Prelude
Greeting to all, it is coming to mid week and welcome back to another new post on Adapting to Modern. In the past we have been looking at the various sets from rewards to core from Rebellion set, now I want to dive a little into the foundation set that came along not too long ago which were released to help new players get into the game. A significant number of these cards can be obtained through campaign mode and these cards are for you to keep. And what's better is that you can use these earned cards to get more of these cards through playing the frontier mode.

For me, these cards do have their value in help newcomers to strengthen the collection until they have sufficient DEC/SPS or other methods of capital injection to purchase main set packs or buy off the market for cards that can truly elevate their lineup. In this series, I will be deep diving into various foundation cards that we can obtain from playing frontier matches and opening foundation packs.

Foundation Set Cards

For the deep dive and analysis, I will be discussing about the growth of the cards and if they can synergize with modern cards to aid you in your ranked battles. This time round, assessment and recommendation will be within the card's own paragraph than having a segment on their own, so take note in the structural change in the post.

Sturdy Axe Warden

Let's begin looking at the foundation card, Sturdy Axe Warden. This card can be obtained from campaign. As usual, one will find that the card for its stat value is definitely higher than what we can find in our usual cards from main set or reward cards, such as Swiftbeard Stout whom is on the same blood line and similar state which cost 1 mana less. Personally, this will help us should we need to have more options for Dwarf Bloodline or when we can only field range attackers. A little squishy in terms of health but not too bad per say considering that it can strike for 2 damage at level 1.

Growth potential will just be on the attack part but for mana efficiency, more health and slightly more speed. Everything gets a little boost as this card levels up which is nice. But certainly in terms of growth, this is a card that is decent but not fantastic.

In terms of rating for this card, based on a score of 5, it will get about 3. Stat wise is really under the average cards but because of its synergy with dwarf bloodline, there is definitely still room to use this and make full use of bloodline boost.

Scales of Justice

Now we look at another card from Fire splinter, Scales of Justice. Interesting name with decent stat at level 1. Key strength of this card is the dodge that the card possess and the high speed that it already possess which will allow this card to effectively dodge attacks well even at level 1. However, the thing that make it not so good is that this card cannot be weapon trained, which is a real pity. Weapon Training had been a strong ability released since Rebellion and 2nd set of Chaos Legion reward cards which allowed cards with no attack to gain some form of attack. So in my usual terms, this card is effectively a pure meat shield hoping to sustain longer due to the dodge. But with many preferring to use magic attack cards, this card could go down real fast when this happens.

In terms of growth for this card, no new abilities but we do see increased speed, armour and health which will improve the survivability of this card for sure. At 5 speed at max level, the dodge should be crazy if there are other ways to further boost speed. However, it works well for melee and range only.

In terms of rating for this card, it will take a rating of 2.8 out of 5. I still think the inability to weapon train hurts big time with the weapon trainers to further enhance these non attacking cards. Imagine how much value it will have if I can train it with Moxian Rebel or other weapon trainers. Another awkward part to this card is that this card is 5 mana which makes it hard for it to be fielded for Little League.

Wrap Up
I have seen many foundation cards being used in modern ranked battles and doing well. So definitely these cards will synergize well with other cards to make them viable and help win matches for players to earn more glint as they continue building up their collection. And this is why I wanted to run through all the foundation cards for players to also see what to focus on to strengthen your ranked battle gameplay.

Let's continue to grow and find path in modern as we journey on playing Splinterlands.

The sturdy warden would be a good card, too bad for the 8 mana cost... Scales of justice, I never use this card 😄
