Hi all, hope all is well for you and it is time for another Battle Mage Secrets. Last week, the ruleset that we discussed locks out range attackers from being used. This week, the ruleset that we discussing is the opposite, giving range attackers a good day.

Close Range
Description:
Units with ranged attacks are allowed to attack in the first position.
What thrives with this ruleset?
This is a great ruleset for the range attackers. Everything and concern that you feared that prohibit you from putting an array of range attacker cards is no longer there. You can essentially load up a whole lineup of range attackers since you will no longer have the first position penalty that range attackers have.
There aren't any range attack improving abilities but there are summoner that boost the range attack such as Yodin and General Sloan. P.S. This ruleset is like a heaven's gift to Yodin, because it's biggest flaw is no longer there. You can also field anti range attack summoners such as Ithain, Quix and Contessa which gives either negative range attack or Return Fire to all cards in your lineup.
On the defensive front, abilities can be used to either reduce the damage or give additional armour to the cards. To reduce damage, Shield and Headwinds are 2 abilities that are real good in this ruleset. Next will be Protect which adds 2 armour to each card and help fend off some damage for additional sustainability. One more ability before I forget is the Return Fire ability to "share back some love" to your opponent coming from their range attackers.
However, there is something important here. Do note that while this ruleset prosper the range attackers, it is essentially still a match where other cards still do well. So do not force it unless indeed you know the range cards will bring you the victory.
Stat line is as usual, more speed, more health and more armour. No special call outs for this.
With these in mind, let's start to talk about the battle proper.

Prediction before pressing rumble
This is a very low mana match, so it is not easy to pack in a lot of cards, so instead of going for usual tanks, I used an alternative Corpse Fiend to absorb damage while my backline dish out more. Opponent seem to be putting all their hopes on Magi Necrosi.
Battle Synopsis
Round 1, Full barrage on, Chaos Agent taken out with Riftwing becoming really low in HP. A snipe went on to Ravenhood but survived this round.
Round 2, Lira opens the round with a smash on Riftwing, then subsequently Ravenhood got sniped again and fall. Soul Strangler takes out the Marksrat before the round closed.
Round 3 and 4, Almost thought the match can end in round 3 but because of the fast speed of Magi Necrosi which dodge one attack. Lira opened round 4 with a match winning strike to bring home the victory!
Post Battle Summary
The tank gamble paid off. The trade off of using better quality range attacker worked well, Lira did the work and secured the victory.
Did my strategy work? A risky strategy where I chose to use a Fiend a first position to serve as a small tank instead of usual tanks such as Cursed Windeku/Harklaw so that I can field strong range attackers in the like of Lira whom strikes fast and has opportunity. The choice of range attackers in the match all had their reasons to be in. Lira for speed and opportunity, Ravenhood for the protection and Soul Strangler for the raw power.
What's the Battle Mage Secret?
Today's Battle Mage Secret is to really play to the ruleset, knowing what we have in our range attacker arsenal. Like for me, what I did was to put in cards each of their own abilities. Lira is just amazing and worthy of my trade off playing a tank. Ravenhood helped give us addtional sustainability with that extra 2 armour which even benefitted Corpse Fiend. Soul Strangler though missing one strike, provided the much needed attacking power to knock down the high health of Riftwing.
There are many amazing range cards with very good abilities, spend some time, understand those abilities so that in future when you have this ruleset you will know what to deploy rather than just playing a normal match. Range attackers often unable to play to their fullest due to the first position penalty, but with such Close Range ruleset, you will be able to see the potential of every of your range attackers.
