Prelude
Hi all, hope all is well for you and it is time for another Battle Mage Secrets. Last week, we were looking at an earth shattering ruleset that kept everyone on their toes. This week, we discuss on a ruleset that level sets everyone to the same health based on the biggest one.
Ruleset Spotlight
Equalizer
Description:
- All unit start with the same health, based on the highest health on either team.
- Buffs and debuffs are done afterward. Ruleset only affect base health.
What thrives with this ruleset?
This is a very interesting ruleset. Reason being that selection of cards becomes absolutely important.
Having high health cards not necessarily will be a good thing here. High health but low attack or just simply "tank" cards is not the wise choice here.
In such matches, we also need to be very mindful on the mana cost of the match. Having one towering big card like Oshannus vs a whole bunch of smaller mana cards, not necessarily might win you the game because everyone else will have same health as Oshannus and might possibly wear down Oshannus before it wears down everyone else. So my general direction is to fill up every slot of the lineup if you can to give yourself sufficient chance to win back the match.
And such, cards that typically you might not select on a common basis due to low health can be considered. Cards such as Ever Hungry Skull, Dumacke Orc and Clockwork Aide become really good in such a rule set. Also, smaller health cards that pack many abilities will now be able to sustain longer in this ruleset, so consider them in your lineup as well.
Next will be on the abilities, since we know health alteration works and is on top of the ruleset, then Strengthen and Weaken becomes very viable in the ruleset.
Otherwise, remaining abilities will be the same as most ruleset to give your team more advantage in terms of speed, armour and reflection.
In terms of stat, this time round, low health is perfectly fine. Look for cards that have higher attacks as they will come in handy to punish opponent lineup whom might field usual cards without knowing capitalizing the ruleset benefits. Speed and armour are essential.
With these in mind, let's start to talk about the battle proper.

Prediction before pressing rumble
Wow, I didn't expect to see Owster Rothwell but wow, strong cards deployed by my opponent. Undead Priest doing what Thaddius did with the -1 health and strong/fast cards on my opponent's lineup.
On my end I also fielded to the best I could, but my worry goes out to Life Sapper upon martyr boosted due to the magic reflect.
Battle Synopsis
Round 1, Undead Priest falls after a myriad of attacks, being finished off by Marksrat. Rest of the lineup still relatively no issue.
Round 2, This round saw the fall of Magi of Chaos after yet another round of barrage with attacks. Leaving opponent now with only 2 range attackers and Weirding Warrior just being a sitting duck due to range attacker at first position.
Round 3, The match wrapped up within this round. While opponent Twisted Jester managed to get rid of Marksrat, it is the double duo range cards that proved their means and taking of Twisted Jester. Victory secured! A good and swift win.
Post Battle Summary
Way to go my little Critters! All doing what they need and bringing home the victory.
Did my strategy work? In such an equalizer ruleset, my key was to fill up the lineup as much as I could. With the mana requirement given, I was able to fill 5 cards of which I knew I needed a tank, a martyr and some good damage output. And the 5 chosen cards all did what they did. Whistling Damon was exceptional.
What's the Battle Mage Secret?
In my title, I mentioned the word critter. So what exactly are critters? To me critters are little league cards and also cards that tend to have very bad lop sided mana to health ratio such as Ever Hungry Skull, Clocwork Aide and also Dumacke Orc. In a Equalizer ruleset, critters will become very important, it gives them more health to do more impact in the game and also actually upgrade those that from normal ruleset being more vulnerable due to their lower health.
Critter also allow you to easily fill up the lineup due to their smaller mana cost. Typically, many critter also carry with them really good abilities like those used by me and my opponent in our match.
Maximize their usage, knowing their abilities will help you in your gameplay to do well in this ruleset. However, the key is also to pay attention to the mana cost so that you can also hide some big guns should the mana permits.
