Hello Splinterlands fam, hope everybody is doing good out there and the victories are flowing inn.

This week’s challenge theme is Modifier Mastery. Which of course got me thinking a lot about some of the small but powerful rulesets that can completely turn a battle around. One of my favorites and honestly one that saved me big time in just one of my recent matches is Reverse Speed. In most battles, speed is king. But in Reverse Speed, it becomes your downfall if you do not adjust your lineup properly and in alignment with the ruleset. slow monsters strike first, Fast monsters suddenly miss, , and most at times a “weaker team” can overthrow a fully charged power squad. And that is exactly what happened in this battle I’m about sharing. I went into the match clearly as the underdog due to the ruleset but to my surprise my opponent brought in Barthalamas (Level 2) as Archon and a fully beefed-up team stacked with high-level monsters from level-2 upwards. The difference in card levels alone looked like a death sentence for me, but with a bit of thinking and the right ccombination of slow units, I managed to snatch the bragging rights. Lets get into how it all went down!!!

Ruleset

Reverse Speed

Under this ruleset, units with the lowest speed attacks first and have the highest chance to evade attacks.

My Lineup

Archon: Marlai Singarie(Level 1)

A perfect pick for this ruleset because boosting my team’s survivability and steady magic output helps slow units perform even better.

#Monsters:

  1. Spellmonger – Slow, thorny monster with very little HP of 1, 2 Armor and a cost mana of 4. Untrainable yet excellent against melee units against heavy hitting, excellent for Reverse Speed.

  2. Colossus Raider – Big body and can use melee attacks from the second position. slow attack speed, and stands strong in early rounds. A cost mana of 5 to be on board, -2 melee damage.

  3. Water-Logged Wizard – A very underrated slow caster with reliable damage of -1 magic attack but additional +1 damage from Marlai Singariel makes her deadly. Has just 3 HP, and a cost mana of 6 to have in a team.

  4. Lunaki Howler – Not to fast, not the weakest, but very dependable in mid-line battles. Also cost 7 mana, having 4hp and a total of -2 magic damage due to the additional +1 from Marlai Singariel.

  5. Vengeful Monk – An opportunist, melee attacker with – 2 damage to opponent, low in speed making it shine here in this battle. This monster costed me just 7 mana and has a good 4 HP.

  6. Grand Consul Minion – A slow range support piece that thrives in Reverse Speed fights. With 4 mana cost and has a Health Point of just 1.

Opponent’s Lineup with a very powerful team

Summoner: Barthalamas (Level 2)

#Monsters:

  1. Frankarsgard (Lv 3)
  2. Chaos Furybringer (Lv 3)
  3. Sturdy Axe Warden (Lv 3)
  4. Ash Archer (Lv 2)
  5. Echelon (Lv 2)

A very powerful lineup with significantly far higher levels than I did. Under normal rules, this is a team that destroys you in 2–3 rounds without a blink of an eye but Reverse Speed changed the narrative.

Round-by-Round Breakdown

Round 1

The battle opens with something surprising : my monsters attack first, and not because they are faster but because they are slower than tortoise. The Tideborn Colossus Raider lands the first hit, Vengeful Monk follows, then the Saurian Grand Consul Minion and and it’s my opponent’s stronger and faster monsters that are forced to wait their turn. Lunaki Howler soaks the damage extremely well, setting the tone for the rest of the battle. After which there was a retaliation and surprisingly, Spellmonger evaded. Another followed and was successful yet not spared a -2 thorn damage back as a gift. Sturdy Axe Warden followed up with a range attack which successfully smash Spellmonger into pieces. The first to exist the battle grounds. Colossus Raider was immediately executed just when he stood up to cover up for Spell.

Round 2

Now the battle shifts. Sturdy Axe Warden begins to fall apart under constant magic pressure. My lineup is still fully functional while the opponent starts losing pieces. Reverse Speed is in full effect; their fast units miss key attacks while my team hits with almost guaranteed accuracy and precision. Vengeful Monk keeps my backline alive, and Lunaki Howler chips away consistently with the help of slow magic from Grand Consul Minion doing quiet but effective work. Meanwhile the magic beast Water-Logged Wizard was now occupying the front roll and with the help from the backline, my opponents had lost all the frontlines already.

Round 3

With just Ash Archer and Echelon remaining, the opponent obviously will be overwhelmed at this point. My late backlinec Lunaki Howler, Monk and Grand Consul completely secures the victory. A match that should have been dominated by higher levels ends in a clean victory for the “weaker team" in just 4 rounds just because i played it to the ruleset.

Why My Lineup Worked

I won because I used slow, steady and high impact monsters that benefited. And in the end benefited from Reverse Speed. My opponent used fast and aggressive units which became a weakness and the ruleset became his enemy. their speed turned into my advantage. My slow units attacked first, hit consistently, and survived long enough to outvalue faster and stronger cards. This was one of those battle wars that reminds you how important it is to read the ruleset carefully before making any selection. Power does not always mean victory. the right ruleset can flip the whole game upside down. Advantage may become disadvantage and vice versa. That’s all for now!!!

Thanks
