I just picked the Water Splinter because the cards looked cool and I liked the idea of using magic and the extra magic boost the archon gives, My first few matches were brutal. I lost again and again, not really understanding why, id just chug it down to strategy. I would throw in random cards hoping for the best, only to get destroyed by someone who clearly knew what they were doing. Lol!. But after each loss, I started noticing small things like how positioning mattered, like sometimes we’d have the exact same cards but id still lose. How some monsters worked better together, and how reading the rulesets before picking my team made a huge difference sometimes, especiall in the modern league. Winning in Splinterlands feels genuinely rewarding, especially when you do it with basic cards and zero spending. I decided from the start that I was going to play completely free-to-play, not spending a single cent, just to see how far I could go. Every battle I fought and every daily quest I completed felt like a small investment toward something bigger. The more you play, the more you understand how to adapt to different rulesets. Sometimes melee attacks are banned, other times magic becomes overpowered, and the trick is to adjust your lineup before the match begins. I learned to focus on one Splinter, mostly Water, instead of jumping between all of them. That made it easier to improve because I started recognizing which combinations worked best.

I don’t have strong cards or huge power levels, but I’ve learned that with the right positioning and timing, even basic cards can sometimes perform miracles. Of course being free to play means accepting that growth takes time. You won’t reach Gold or Diamond anytime soon but the sense of progress is real. Some people might find the slow grind frustrating, but for me, that’s the fun part, sometimes of course while sometimes I get frustrated with my losing streak and just quit the game. For now, I’m just enjoying the process the learning, the small victories, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing that yes, free-to-play in Splinterlands is definitely possible, although you will in all honesty not get far.
hehe....
Free to play is brutally hard and I see you are in the Frontier / Foundations league. I hit mid / high bronze with little difficulty in that league as free to play and with fairly minimal cash high mid silver. Topping out Silver/Gold will require cash outlay.
If you haven't don't the tutorial I would highly recommend it.
