Yesterday I wrote a pretty long chapter, so I decided to divide it into several parts.
Here is how the last part has ended:
But the more he spoke, the more terrified we became - and the more it felt like the end of the world had already begun.
“Why are you wearing a crown on your head?”
My younger brother suddenly asked Maurice. And indeed - where did Maurice get a golden crown?
“This is not just a crown. It enhances our abilities. With it, I can speak your language and communicate telepathically with my comrades. We only wear the crown in emergency situations. And right now, it will help you determine who is on your side.”
We didn’t quite understand what he meant by those last words, but we decided not to focus on it for now.
We fed Maurice, seating him at the table with us, and began discussing our next steps.
Maurice told us about those creatures. They appeared in the universe several hundred years ago. They feed on evil, deception, treachery, cruelty, and all other human vices. And in recent years, these creatures have grown very powerful, powerful enough to reach Earth.
“Does that mean people have become very evil?” my younger brother suddenly asked.
“Unfortunately, yes,” Maurice replied.
We fell silent, thinking. And indeed, lately the world seemed to be filled with more and more crime. More and more often, we saw people insulting each other, being rude, and raising their voices at one another. And we heard kind words less and less. Words like thank you, please, and sorry were becoming rare. People were smiling less…
These thoughts made us sad.
“But what should we do? How do we protect Earth and drive these monsters away?”
Maurice said that more monsters were arriving on Earth than his comrades could destroy. That meant we urgently needed to find another way to stop them. We spent a long time discussing all possible options, but we couldn’t come up with anything that might actually work. Every idea we voiced seemed to fall apart as soon as we said it out loud.
And when we had almost no hope or energy left, my younger brother asked a simple, but very important question.
