Al principio del juego, Jack, el cual es el protagonista. Es uno más de los pasajeros de un vuelo en 1960. Este aparentemente sufre un accidente mientras sobrevolaba el Atlántico y tras el impacto Jack resulta ser el único sobreviviente y al recuperarse, emerge hasta la superficie nadando entre los restos del avión en dirección a una pequeña isla cercana, coronada por una torre con aspecto de faro. Esa extraña torre es la entrada a Rapture una utopía submarina. Bueno... era una utopía submarina.
At the beginning of the game, Jack, who is the protagonist. He is one of the passengers of a flight in 1960. This apparently suffers an accident while flying over the Atlantic and after the impact Jack turns out to be the only survivor and when he recovers, he emerges to the surface swimming among the wreckage of the plane in the direction of a small nearby island, topped by a lighthouse-like tower. That strange tower is the entrance to Rapture an underwater utopia. Well ... it was an underwater utopia.
Jack se enterará de la historia de Rapture a través de grabaciones de audio mientras la explora. Esta ciudad fue posible gracias al magnate Andrew Ryan, el cual quería crear un estado completamente libre donde sus habitantes tuvieran plena libertad, ya que el hombre buscaba escapar de la autoridad política, económica y religiosa cada vez más opresiva en tierra.
Jack will learn about the history of Rapture through audio recordings as he explores it. This city was possible thanks to the tycoon Andrew Ryan, who wanted to create a completely free state where its inhabitants had full freedom, since man sought to escape from the increasingly oppressive political, economic and religious authority on earth.
La ciudad fue secretamente construida en 1946 sobre un relieve oceánico ya que usaría los volcanes submarinos para proveer a la misma de energía geotérmica. Los avances científicos florecieron en Rapture conduciendo a un rápido desarrollo en ingeniería y biotecnología, gracias a los brillantes científicos que Ryan trajo a la ciudad. Uno de esos adelantos científicos fue el ADAM. Células madre cosechadas de una especie de babosas de mar anteriormente desconocida, la cual fue descubierta por la Dra. Bridgette Tenenbaum. Un descubrimiento que haría posible regenerar el tejido dañado a grandes velocidades y reescribir el genoma humano. Descubrimiento que condenaría a la ciudad y a todos sus habitantes.
The city was secretly built in 1946 on an oceanic relief as it would use underwater volcanoes to provide it with geothermal energy. Scientific advances flourished in Rapture leading to rapid development in engineering and biotechnology, thanks to the brilliant scientists that Ryan brought to town. One of those scientific breakthroughs was ADAM. Stem cells harvested from a previously unknown species of sea slug, which was discovered by Dr. Bridgette Tenenbaum. A discovery that would make it possible to regenerate damaged tissue at high speeds and rewrite the human genome. Discovery that would doom the city and all is people.
Conforme avancemos nos enteraremos en detalle de todos los acontecimientos que llevaron la ciudad a la ruina. Pero el momento más recordado del juego es cuando confrontamos a Andrew Ryan. El cual nos explica el porque de la creación de Rapture y su filosofía, ya que todo Bioshock se inspira directamente en la filosofía de Ayn Rand (autora de los libros en los que se inspira la franquicia). "El objetivismo". Para Rand, el hombre libre está por encima, y tiene derecho a controlar, al parásito o esclavo. Esa era la creencia de Ryan. Creía que solo los hombres daban ordenes y aquellos quienes obedecían estas eran simples esclavos. Eso le mostró a Jack cuando el mismo decide morir dándole la orden a Jack de que lo mate. Debido a que este era un esclavo que solo seguía ordenes. Entre ellas las ordenes del jugador y el mismo jugador resulta ser el esclavo, ya que solo hace lo que le dicen. "En esta ciudad no hay ni dioses, ni reyes. Solo hombres."
As we progress we will learn in detail about all the events that led the city to ruin. But the most memorable moment of the game is when we confront Andrew Ryan. Which explains the reason for the creation of Rapture and the philosophy of it, since all Bioshock is directly inspired by the philosophy of Ayn Rand (author of the books in which the franchise is inspired). "Objectivism". For Rand, the free man is above, and has the right to control, the parasite or slave. That was Ryan's belief. He believed that only men gave orders and those who obeyed them were mere slaves. That he showed Jack when he himself decides to die by ordering Jack to kill him. Because this was a slave who only followed orders. Among them the player's orders and the player himself turns out to be the slave, since he only does what they tell him. "In this city there are neither gods, nor kings. Only men."
