"El arte del clown tiene sus orígenes en el circo con el payaso que todo mundo conoce, el de nariz roja, llamado Augusto que era ingenuo, torpe y en ocasiones, estúpido y todo le salía mal. Su contrapunto era el clown de cara blanca, éste representa la autoridad, era elegante, serio y no le gustaban las bromas.Desde sus inicios, el artista de clown era multidisciplinar, es decir, no sólo era un payaso, también realizaba actos de malabarismo, acrobacias, tocaba instrumentos musicales, etc. Se puede decir que gran parte de los payasos de circo comenzaron siendo artistas de otras especialidades y al no poder continuar con sus rutinas, terminaban por convertirse en payasos".

Una de las tantas técnicas que tiene el teatro, es el clown que es el método de actuar de un payaso, pero trasladada al universo del actor; puesto que, el clown crea su propia rutina y personaje, sin tener que seguir (tradicionalmente) a un director. Otra diferencia entre el artista de clown y el actor es su capacidad física, puesto que el clown trabaja mucho con su cuerpo, en algunos casos realizan acrobacias o caídas. Pero, lo más importante es la conexión que se establece entre la audiencia y el artista que es a través de la mirada, ya que en un espectáculo de clown no hay diálogos, su arte consiste en transmitir a través de su cuerpo y gesticulaciones.
