I agree with you: right now, they use any event to promote confrontation. Anything is an excuse for war. Likewise, history is written by a few, and much of what has been written is biased by the opinions, interests, and even the imagination of those few. An interesting topic. You can probably even add rumour to the list of what can distort history. What I do like is that with the modern world where we have more co-operation between countries historians are getting access to historical documents and accounts from the other side of conflicts. By the third crusade the Muslims also had people documenting the events so when those match up with the crusader's accounts we can be more certain whether the descriptions are accurate or exagerated.
