Active Hive Accounts by Category | Posts, Votes, Transfers, Custom JSON | Oct 2024

in Hive Statisticsyesterday

How many active accounts does the Hive blockchain have in 2024? What are they doing on chain, posting, gaming, transferring funds?
The Hive blockchains has around 2.5M. What percentage of these accounts are active?
How has the market influenced the number of active accounts?

Let’s take a look!

Top Four Hive Operations

We will be looking at the activity on the chain by the top operations made:

  • Post and comment
  • Votes/Curate
  • Transfer coins
  • Custom JSON transactions

Apart from the above, reading, or page views, is also a crucial part of this ecosystem, but this type of operation is not stored on the blockchain.

We will be looking at the number of active accounts by the operations stated above for the 2020 – 2024 period.
We will be looking at the number of DAUs (daily active users), the number of MAUs (monthly active users), and then summary for the whole year.

Daily Number of Active Accounts

First let’s take a look at the number of accounts active per day. Here is the chart.

image001.png

The above is the chart for DAUs, for accounts making any type of operation.
This chart is from the Hive creation fork, back from March 2020. As we can see at first in 2020 the number of DAUs was low with around 15k to 20k accounts making any type of operation on the Hive blockchain daily.

Then in the summer of 2021 this number increased significantly driven by the success of Splinterlands. At one point the DAUS reached 500k per day. In 2022 the DAUs numbers were around 200k, and in 2023 this number continued to go down in the range of 50k to 10k DAUs.

In 2024 at first there was some spikes in the activity up to 100k per day, but in the last period it has dropped and we are now at 24K DAUs.

Most of these movements are due to Splinterlands active players.

Active Accounts by Category

What type of operations are these accounts making?
From previous analysis we know that most of the DAUs are coming from Splinterlands. If we take a look at a chart with active accounts per operation, we got this:

image003.png

The top line are the accounts making custom JSON operations, that in most cases are gaming/Splinterlands operations. The number of these accounts is much higher then the rest of the operations that we can barely see them on the bottom of the chart. Although we can notice that they have declined significantly.

If we zoom in 2024 we get this:

image005.png

What can we see here is that the number of users making custom json operations have dropped from 50k to 12k where they are now and have been quite stable since the summer.

The rest of the operations, posting, curating, transfers are quite stable and are 3k DAUs for posts, 11k for curation, and 1.3k for transfers.

Active Accounts Posting or Commenting
If we focus only on the core activity so to speak, the chart for accounts making post or comments looks like this:

image007.png

We can notice the uptrend until January 2022, and then a steady downtrend since then. At the top there were around 5.5k accounts making posts or comment daily. Now we are at 3k DAUs, back around the level where we were in 2020. The drop in the number of posting and commenting accounts is much smaller compared to the overall activity.

Monthly Number of Active Accounts

The monthly numbers might give a better perspective for active accounts, as not all the users are making operations daily. Here is the chart.

image015.png

We can see the sharp increase in the MAUs back in 2021. From around 50k to more than 700k in a few months. After the peak at the end of 2021, the number of MAUs has steadily been going down.

There is a further drop in the summer from 200k down to 55k where we are now.

When we zoom in 2023-2024 for MAUs we get this:

image017.png

Around 400k MAUs at the beginning of 2023, while we are now at 55k. All these wild oscillations are mostly due to Splinterlands. The 50k MAUs seems where we were in 2020, so it might be the bottom.

When we breakdown the monthly active accounts by type of operation we get this:

image011.png

As for the DAUs, we can see that the custom JSON operations dominate this chart as well.
Back in 2021 there were 700k accounts making custom json operations while now we are at 55k MAUs.

If we zoom in , we get this:

image013.png

The MAUs are now close with 30k for json, 16k for curation, and around the same, 9k for posts and transfers.

Active Hive Accounts by Category

For the month of April 2024, the number of MAUs, summarized by categories looks like this.

image017.png

Number of active accounts in October 2024 by operation:

  • Custom JSON - 30k
  • Votes – 16k
  • Post and Comments – 10k
  • Transfers – 9.5k

Gaming is on the top, in the second spot with 16k is curation/votes, then comes transfers and posting comes at the end.

All the best

Useful insight about the accounts activity on the Hive blockchain. We need for a new app to hit it big to relive the amazing times from the past. Or who knows, all recent projects in the process will be successful.

SPS AIRDROP

generally creating value for existing users increase activity

all this onboarding is non sense, no one really knows how to do it, but so many people pretend, even with clear statistics showing effects of theirs work over last years...

Try to entertain my old idea about 1M HBD airdrop from DHF to users, which could be done in various forms, from simple distribution for users who vote proposal, increasing activity in governance, to distribution between all the communities. DHF already eats 3M$ per year, which goes to small group of people. Even marketing possibilities with that idea are huge...

Yes

P.S. About the airdrop ... create the proposal :)

Yep, it's been almost like a ghost town around here...

It's just a big downward slide on all charts from the looks of it.

Posting is somewhat stable

Yeah, but engagement sucks overall. So yeah, people can steadily post, but there is nobody consuming the content.

Really depends on the content creator

It does seem like the activities on the platform depend on the market value of $Hive. This is something that will be tested if Hive does well in the coming alt-season.

I'm still optimistic, especially knowing that backend development is happening and there are gaming projects currently being developed, like Holozing, that could increase activity on the platform.

Also note that there are a good number of loyal users who have gone through tough times. So we can expect that this number will increase over time.

I wonder what is the percentage of newbies who become constant on HIVE.

Very small :)

Hive is becoming a social network with many obstacles.

Looking at those numbers, I'm surprised that HIVE hasn't dropped even more in price. I'm hoping that once retail gets back to crypto, part will find their way onto hive or splinterlands creating a positive momentum. At the same time, there isn't really that much incentive for people to actually buy HIVE while there is a constant sell pressure from those who are cashing out everything they earn along with the HBD 15% intrests which keeps sucking the value away from Hive.

If HIVE value goes up, so will the activity. But it's a catch 22, low activity means low HIVE value. The trick is be active now, while the getting is good. !BBH

Should I say people got busy with something else🤔🤔
But when the price rises, we will surely see more people posting, lol

I don't even know what degree is my account in terms of activities

We need to get back to the peak. 24 DAU is really low.

@dalz! @ironshield likes your content! so I just sent 1 BBH to your account on behalf of @ironshield. (11/100)
