Górna Swanetia i Wieże w okolicy miasteczka Mestia - moja podróż po Gruzji
When traveling around the Caucasus, it is impossible not to notice certain buildings characteristic of this region. They can be seen both near Mount Kazbeg, close to the border with Russia, and also in the vicinity of the town of Mestia, located at the foot of Mount Ushba. I will say more - for many it is one of the greatest attractions of this region.
Podróżując po Kaukazie nie sposób nie zauważyć pewnych charakterystycznych budowli dla tego regionu. Można je zobaczyć zarówno w okolicach góry Kazbeg, blisko granicy z Rosją, ale również w Okolicy miasteczka Mestia położonego u stóp góry Ushba. Powiem więcej - dla wielu jest to jedna z największych atrakcji tego regionu.

These buildings are characteristic towers that have served various functions over the centuries. Most buildings of this type are in the Upper Svaneti region, around the towns of Mestia and the village of Ushguli, located deep in the mountains. The towers were included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1996.
Tymi budowlami są charakterystyczne wieże, które na przestrzeni wieków sprawowały różnorakie funkcje. Najwięcej tego typu budowli jest w regionie Górnej Swanetii w okolicy miasteczek Mestia, i położonej głęboko w górach wioski Uszguli. Wieże zostały wpisane w 1996 roku na listę Światowego Dziedzictwa Kulturalnego i przyrodniczego UNESCO.

When were the towers built and what was their function?
Kiedy powstały i jaką pełniły funkcję wieże?
The famous Svan stone towers were probably built in the first century AD. The purpose of the towers is not precisely defined because it has changed over the centuries. Nevertheless, most historians agree that these stone structures had several functions.
Słynne Swańskie kamienne wieże powstały prawdopodobnie już w pierwszym wieku naszej ery. Przeznaczenie wież nie jest dokładnie określone, ponieważ zmieniało się ono na przestrzeni wieków. Niemniej jednak większość historyków zgadza się, że te kamienne budowle miały kilka funkcji.
A typical tower has several floors. Usually five, sometimes six floors, reached by ladder. The largest buildings of this type are over 215 meters high. The whole thing is made of rocks and huge stones, and the thickness of this tower was up to 150 cm at the base and decreased with height to reach about 70 cm at the top.
Typowa wieża posiada kilka kondygnacji. Zazwyczaj pięć, czasami 6 pięter, na które przemieszano się po drabinie. Największe tego typu budowle mają ponad 215 metrów wysokości. Całość wykonana jest ze skał i potężnych kamieni, a grubość tej wieży dochodziła do 150 cm u podstawy a w raz z wysokością zmniejszała się by na szczycie osiągnąć około 70 cm.
The entrance to the tower was only on the 1st or 2nd floor, where wooden stairs led. The entire everyday life of people and animals took place on individual levels of this building. Animals lived at the lowest level, people with their families lived above, and the top of the tower was a place for defense equipped with viewpoints, observation points and firing points.
Wejście do wieży znajdowało się dopiero na 1 lub 2 kondygnacji, gdzie prowadziły drewniane schody. Na poszczególnych poziomach tej budowli rozgrywało się całe codzienne życie ludzi i zwierząt. Na najniższym poziomie żyły zwierzęta, powyżej ludzie z rodzinami, a góra wieży była miejscem do obrony zaopatrzonym w punkty widokowe, obserwacyjne oraz umożliwiające ostrzał.
I must admit that the entrance to the tower itself is impressive. First of all, you had to have good physical fitness, because moving to individual levels is not an easy matter.
Muszę przyznać, że samo wejście do wieży robi wrażenie. Przede wszystkim trzeba było mieć niezłą sprawność fizyczną, bo przechodzenie na poszczególne poziomy to nie nie jest prosta sprawa.
In times of peace and relative peace, the towers served as warehouses, and classic houses and farms were built around them.
W czasach pokoju i względnego spokoju, wieże pełniły funkcję magazynów, a wokół nich budowano klasyczne domy i gospodarstwa rolne.
Most of the towers that we can observe today in the area of the town of Mestia and the village of Ushguli come from the period from the 9th to the 13th century, which proves their incredible durability. Weather conditions in winter in this region of the Caucasus are quite harsh, as the village itself is located at an altitude of over 1,500 m above sea level. and there are plenty of mountains around 4000 m above sea level.
Większość wież które możemy dzisiaj obserwować w rejonie miasteczka Mestia i wioski Ushguli pochodzi z okresu od IX do XIII wieku, co świadczy o ich niesamowitej wytrzymałości. Warunki atmosferyczne bowiem w okresie zimowym w tym rejonie Kaukazu są dość srogie, bowiem sama wioska umiejscowiona jest na wysokości ponad 1500 m n.p.m. a wokół pełno jest gór powyżej 4000 m n.p.m.
