Denmarkguy HiveBloPoMo Day 15 (In Retrospect): Crappy Weather Broke the Chain!

in HiveBloPoMo2 years ago

I wrote this yesterday — on my phone, no less — but was never able to post it. And so, my attempt at blogging for 30 days straight came to an end, halfway through... as the following will somewhat explain...

While there was actually enough of a break in the clouds to take a picture...

Woke up to torrential rain and high winds this morning... and then it just got worse from there.

By 9:45 the winds were gusting to near 60 miles an hour (95km/h) and the rain was going sideways. We live in a heavily wooded part of the world, so needless to say the electricity went next, shortly thereafter.

The culprit?

FilterTree

A very tall tree fell across the main feeder line into town... putting 11,000 homes in the dark. We are somewhat used to these things around here so no big deal, usually they get us back online within a few hours... except for the fact that my 14-day HiveBloPoMo streak was immediately in jeopardy... it takes a while to reinstall an electricity trunk line in high winds and driving rain... and I sure don't envy those out there, trying to make it happen!

Thankfully, the rain stopped in early afternoon and you could really see how choppy our little bay out front was getting.

Alas, we also live in an area that has all but NO cell service, so the idea of writing a post an publishing it from my phone is out... we can just about handle basic texting, from our house.

So what do you DO when the power and communications are out?

In my case, there's fortunately enough natural light in my creativity workspace that I can sit down and do something like paint on rocks... at least for a few hours.

Fortunately, my laptop also had enough of a charge that I could do some basic writing, like continuing the rough draft of this post.

It all makes me realize just HOW dependent we are on our modern technological conveniences. Thank goodness we always have lots of candles in the house... for later, if the power doesn't come back on, soon.

The bay on front of our house... normally a millpond...

A lot of time passes...

It is now 7:15pm, and we remain in the dark... some people in the region have electricity, but not our area. They fixed the main line, only to learn that a couple of trees closer to town had taken out another part of the feeder.

Meanwhile, the rain has stopped but the storm still rages, giving the power company crews the additional headache that more new outages are reported, even as old ones are fixed.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Denmarkguy is making good use of the time by burning boxes of old documents that otherwise were bound for the shredder. The aftermath of the fire will become what we call "Ashes from Hell" because most of aforesaid papers date back to past bankruptcies, divorces, loan settlements, taxes and other hellish things! Yes, she sells them. Yes, I'm sure she'd take Hive in payment.

Anyway, I doubt we'll see the power back on today, so day 15 of the HiveBloPoMo challenge will have to be published later as an addendum. Oh, well...

Postscript...

Our electricity finally came on at 6:15am, after an approximately 20-hour long outage... certainly among the longest we have had in the past decade or so.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week ahead!

That's sounds interesting

No elelctricy, No problem! It's such a good thing that we can still be able to share our experience here at Hive. Take care!

Yikes, @denmarkguy - sorry to hear about the storm, not to mention the power outage. We had an extraordinarily bad ice storm here in New Hampshire back in 2010, and we lost power for seven days. Never thought in this day and age we'd ever go that long (although technically we didn't the entire time, since we were able to stay with family and friends off and on over the week).

And I love the idea of, "Ashes from hell." 😂

Hope the lights stay on for you and the missus now.

Oh, sorry! You were on a streak! I say you continue because you can and heck, you write pretty nice. :)

I lived in Florida for one year (job) and had three hurricanes/tropical storms. Lost power each time, once flooded the neighborhood and made us boat people with no electricity/gas because it was under water (except me!) and Red Cross delivered our meals.

Mother Nature can be a real witch sometimes!
