Hello friends from YouHive,
Thinking back to the cartoons I used to watch in my childhood always brings me lovely memories, especially that magical moment of having my snack in front of the television: those delicious toasted rolls my great-aunt Tita would prepare for me, using a gadget she placed directly on the stove, with the bread inside and, of course, whatever she added to it. It could be ham and cheese (or both), cheese and guava paste (or both — the famous pan con timba), or oil and garlic... just to mention a few. 😁 I don’t know why I’m always thinking about food these days...
Anyway, that toaster — they say — is a Cuban invention. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to go and look for one at a place here in Havana called La Cuevita, where they sell all sorts of handmade gadgets. And well, it wasn’t just bread that Tita gave me for my snack; it came with yoghurt, lemonade, mango juice (Taoro), refresco prieto, as she called it, or piñita, which she referred to as Materva. As I grew older, I lost interest in fizzy drinks.
My grandmother always made me the most delicious snacks around ten in the morning, to sum it up... And, curiously, those are memories of weekends, school breaks, or summer holidays between July and August, when I would be watching cartoons at that hour.
But Cuban gastronomy isn’t the subject of this post; I’m just setting the scene so you can picture little Anaraycita, lost in her thoughts in front of the TV. I wouldn’t even hear if someone asked me from the kitchen whether I wanted anything else; sometimes, suddenly, Tita would appear in front of me and I’d jump: “Anaray, are you daydreaming?”, she’d exclaim. 🤣
I’ve always had my little mental quirks, so to speak. 😂
And while we’re at it... attention! At minute 7:40 😂 it looks like the cook is grabbing the gadget by the metal part with his bare hand. Don’t do that, you’ll burn yourself — that thing gets hot. But later on you can see that the toaster seems to have lost one of its handles. By the way, at minute 7:52 the first piece of bread comes out.
What was I going to talk about here? Ahhh... cartoons. Imagine, I watched so many, although I had my favourites. I already spoke ages ago here on Hive about one of them: the cartoon saga of Elpidio Valdés. However, today I’ve come with the Russian cartoons that everyone from my generation watched. That’s how I found this video with a Top 10 that I thought was brilliant.

I also remember having those Russian storybooks, the ones where the figures would pop up as you opened them. My mother brought some from there, if I’m not mistaken, but others were sold in bookshops here, and my aunts bought those for me. I was born in 1980, in Kiev, and at three months old I came to Cuba without ever seeing snow. Yet everything Russian was present here, so it felt more like an interprovincial journey... into eternal summer.
From the list of cartoons I shared in the previous video, my favourites are The Frog Princess, Fantito, The Bremen Musicians, The Three from Sour Milk, You’ll Pay for This (Nu, pogodi!), and Bolek and Lolek.
Let’s see... Tusa Cutusa, fierce animal... 😄 Another thing I really enjoyed was La Comedia Silente, narrated by Armando Calderón, who was known as the man of a thousand voices.

I think this was sometimes a bit risqué for children 🤣. I didn’t see it myself, but they say that one day the man, in a sudden outburst, let slip an expression that has gone down in history. Notice how it’s still said constantly here. I won’t write it myself; I’ll quote it. It’s true that there’s no evidence of it; besides, that incident was denied on television itself, in a talk show.
Even so, from experience, some of us already know that when the river makes a noise, it’s because it carries stones. 😄
Without a doubt, the great milestone of Cuban television blunders was Armando Calderón in *La comedia silente*. On Sunday mornings, as part of children’s programming, Channel 6 would show a series of silent film shorts that Calderón narrated live — there were no prior recordings or delayed broadcasts back then. The man indulged in details and witty remarks with a creativity and ease worthy of admiration. In one of those scenes, something like the “war of the cakes” or “Songo hit Borondongo and Borondongo hit Bernabé,” almost suffocated by the speed the episode demanded, he concluded: “¡Esto está de pinga, queridos amiguitos!” (There’s no way to translate this, it’s too rude haha... “This is bloody brilliant, dear little friends!” 🤣). The phrase was instantly and forever embedded in popular language and is repeated left and right whenever things are heating up — which is to say, constantly. src

The rats want to destroy the school garden and they hurl nasty words at each other. Besides the rats being alcoholic, drinking “coronilla”, that phrase “cayeron en el jamo” is like saying they fell into the trap… this way of speaking we even ended up adopting. Lots of people imitate it really well, right @mdrguez? Mientes, rata inmunda 🤣 (Liar, you dirty rat).
Well, I’ve already drifted away from the Russian cartoons, which was my plan. There you can also see that with such content not everyone can remain entirely in their right mind, so I hope this serves as a revelation about me, for you, my dear readers.

Entre risas y recuerdos

Pensar en los dibujos animados que veía en mi niñez es algo que siempre me trae muchos recuerdos bonitos, y, sobre todo, aquel momento mágico de merendar frente al televisor los ricos panecillos tostados que me preparaba mi tía abuela Tita, en un artefacto que ponía directamente en el fogón, con el pan adentro y, por supuesto, lo que le ponía al pan: podía ser jamón y queso (o los dos), queso y conserva de guayaba (o los dos, el llamado pan con timba), o aceite y ajo... por mencionar algunos. 😁 Yo no sé por qué últimamente siempre estoy pensando en comida...
En fin, aquel tostador —dicen— es un invento cubano. No sería mala idea ir a buscar uno de esos a un lugar que hay aquí en La Habana, llamado La Cuevita, donde venden todo tipo de artefactos artesanales. Y bueno, no era solo un pan lo que me daba Tita para merendar; venía acompañado de yogurt, limonada, jugo de mango (Taoro), refresco prieto —como le decía ella— o de piñita, al que se refería como Materva. Ya de grande perdí mi interés por los refrescos de globitos.
Mi abuela siempre me preparaba unas meriendas riquísimas sobre las diez de la mañana, para resumir... Y, curiosamente, esos son recuerdos de fines de semana, semanas de receso escolar o vacaciones de verano entre julio y agosto, cuando yo, sobre esa hora, veía los dibujos animados.
Pero la gastronomía cubana no es el tema del post; solo estoy poniéndote en situación para que imagines a la pequeña Anaraycita, perdida en sus pensamientos frente al televisor. Yo ni escuchaba si me preguntaban desde la cocina si quería algo más; a veces, de pronto, tenía a mi Tita delante y pegaba un brinco: «¿Anaray, tú estás lela?», exclamaba. 🤣
Siempre he tenido mis problemas mentales, como quien dice. 😂
Y ya que estamos... ¡atención! En el minuto 7:40 😂 parece que el cocinero está agarrando el artefacto por la parte de metal con la mano pelá. Usted no vaya a hacer eso, que se va a quemar: esa cosa se pone caliente. Pero, bueno, más adelante se ve que el tostador perdió uno de los agarres. Por cierto, en el minuto 7:52 sale el primer pan.
¿De qué iba a hablar yo aquí? Ahhh... los dibujos animados. Figúrate, veía tantos, aunque tenía mis preferidos. De uno ya hablé hace ni se sabe cuándo aquí en Hive: la saga de dibujos animados de Elpidio Valdés. Sin embargo, hoy vengo con los muñequitos rusos que todos los de mi generación vimos. Así encontré este video con un top 10 que me pareció genial.

Recuerdo que también tenía los libros de cuentos rusos, esos de los que salían las figuras hacia arriba al abrirlos. Mi madre trajo de allá algunos, si mal no recuerdo, pero otros los vendían en las librerías aquí, y esos me los compraban mis tías. Yo nací en el 80, en Kiev, y, a los tres meses, vine para Cuba sin ver la nieve. Pero todo lo ruso lo teníamos por acá, así que fue como un viaje interprovincial... hacia el eterno verano.
De la relación de muñequitos que les presenté en el video anterior, mis preferidos son La Princesa Rana, Fantito, Los Músicos de Bremen, Los tres de Leche Cortada, Me las Pagarás (Nu, pogodí!) y Bolek y Lolek.
A ver... Tusa Cutusa, animal feroz... 😄 Otra cosa que me gustaba mucho era La Comedia Silente, narrada por Armando Calderón, a quien llamaban el hombre de las mil voces.

Creo que esto estaba, a veces, un poco subido de tono para los niños 🤣. Yo no lo vi, pero dicen que el hombre, un día, en un arrebato, soltó una expresión que ha quedado para la historia. Fíjate que aquí se dice constantemente. No la voy a escribir yo; la voy a citar. Sí es verdad que no hay evidencia de ello; además, ese suceso fue desmentido en la propia TV, en un show de entrevistas.
Aun así, por experiencia, algunos ya sabemos que, cuando el río suena, es porque piedras trae.
Sin lugar a dudas, el gran hito de las pifias televisivas cubanas fue el de Armando Calderón en La comedia silente. Los domingos en la mañana, como parte de la programación infantil, pasaban en el Canal 6 una serie de cortos del cine mudo que Calderón iba narrando en vivo —no había entonces grabaciones previas ni trasmisiones diferidas—. El hombre se engolosinaba en detalles y ocurrencias con una creatividad y una soltura dignas de asombro. En una de aquellas escenas, algo así como la guerra de los pasteles o un Songo le dio a Borondongo y Borondongo le dio a Bernabé, casi asfixiado por la celeridad que el capítulo le exigía, concluyó: “¡Esto está de pinga, queridos amiguitos!” La frase se insertó en ese mismo instante y para siempre en el lenguaje popular y se repite a diestra y siniestra cada vez que la cosa está que arde —o sea, constantemente. src

Las ratas quieren destruir el huerto escolar y se dicen cosas feas entre ellas. Además de que son alcohólicas las ratas tomando “coronilla”, esa frase “cayeron en el jamo” es como decir que cayeron en la trampa… esta manera de hablar hasta la llegamos a adoptar. Mucha gente lo imita muy bien, ¿verdad @mdrguez?
Mientes, rata inmunda 🤣.
Y bueno ya me salí de los muñequitos rusos, lo cual era mi plan. Allí se puede ver también que con ese contenido no todo el mundo puede conservarse íntegramente en sus cabales, así que espero que esto sea una revelación acerca de mí, para ustedes mis queridos lectores.

Buenos días @anixxx, parece que no nos encontramos en Hive... no ví esta publicación, hasta ahora. 😱 Puedo imaginarme a esa niña concentrada viendo la tele, como puedo imaginarme el poder de atrapar la atención de esos dibujos soviéticos. Por aquí teníamos dos canales y todos los niños esperábamos el comienzo de la emisión infantil para ponernos delante de la tele.
De lo que compartes me he reído mucho con la "Comedia Silente"... y de los dibujos rusos sólo recuerdo haber visto los del Osito Misha, no sé cómo se llamría por allá, de las olimpiadas de Moscú.

Good morning, @anixxx! It seems we missed each other on Hive... I didn't see this post until just now. 😱 I can easily picture that little girl glued to the TV, just as I can imagine the captivating power of those Soviet cartoons. Back where I lived, we only had two channels, and every kid would eagerly wait for the children's programming to start so we could plant ourselves right in front of the screen.
Of everything you shared, I got a real kick out of the "Silent Comedy"... and as for the Russian cartoons, the only ones I remember seeing are the ones featuring Misha the Bear—I’m not sure what he was called over there—from the Moscow Olympics.

"Rata inmunda" esto está buenísimo jajajajaja. Nosotras veíamos los muñes juntas??? 🤪 En mi casa no había luz eléctrica, pero...había una planta generadora de gasolina!!!! Eran otros tiempos...por suerte!!!🤣🤣🤣. La ponían para las 9 casas del barrio, desde las 7:00 pm hasta después de la novela. Veíamos muñes, las aventuras, el noticiero y por supuesto...la novela!!! Ayyy los muñes rusos...que mal me caía "Deja que te coja" 🤮, pero los Kosacos, Los músicos de Bremen...ahí faltó Orejistas a cuadro..y otro que no recuerdo el nombre, el del hipopótamo..."se hiela, no come nada"...yo no entendía bien el doblaje y me parecía que decía: "se llena, no come nada"...Y yo en mi guanajá, pero cómo se llena si no come nada??? 🤣🤣🤣. Ay Amanda!!! Y esto es pa jo hablar de Voltus 5, Masinger, Ulises 31, Arcadia y por ahí pa"lla 🤪

But these drawings are brilliant, and there must be so many more out there. What a lovely story about the snacks your grandmother used to give you; that’s the best thing about these reviews—those emotional experiences.
