History
On August 31, 2013, Bank Negara Malaysia launched a commemorative coin in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the National Museum. The National Museum Coin was launched at the grounds of the National Museum of Kuala Lumpur, officially opened by Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Tourism and Culture of Malaysia.

At this front of the coin displays, the front image of the National Museum displayed on the center of the coin. The word "JUBLI EMAS MUZIUM NEGARA" and the year "1963 - 2013" which marks the 50th anniversary of the National Museum is on the top of the coin.

At the back of this coin displaying a mural image from the National Museum is displayed on the center of the coin. The word "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA", the issuing authority of this commemorative coin is displayed at the top of the coin, while the face value of the coin is shown at the bottom.

The National Museum was officially opened on August 31, 1963, by the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong Malaysia, Tuanku Syed Putra Al-Haj ibni Al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail. The museum was erected on the former Museum of the Selangor Museum which was destroyed on March 10, 1945, due to bombing during the second world war.

The commemorative coins are minted and packed by Bank Negara Malaysia and sold on 2 September 2013 at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery (MAG) and regional offices in Penang and Johor Bahru, and branches in Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching. Pre-sale was made at the National Museum beginning at 5.00 pm during the day of its launch.
