I've known about this Calico Jack 1oz Silver Jolly Roger round from Silver Gold Stackers community, when I saw one I bought two. A premium on this coin, I don't mind, it would be the last round that I sell, arrrgh.
Calico Jack and the Jolly Roger
One of the most recognized pirates, John Rackham, was nicknamed Calico Jack for being stylish and cunning - clothes made with calico cloth from India. After making a name plundering small ships close to the West Indies, he plundered a few too many larger vessels and had to retreat to the Bahamas in 1719, to take advantage of a Royal pardon offered to pirates - administered by Governor Woodes Rogers who was responsible for dealing with pirates in the Caribbean. Calico Jack had to turn back to the life of piracy, pursued by Roger (Source).
Calico Jack Round
This 1oz Calico Jack silver round is from the New Zealand Mint. It features the skull and cross swords Jolly Roger , with a wavy line background and rolling wave border.
Along the top curve of the round is "CALICO JACK", along the bottom curve of the round is "JOLLY ROGER 1OZ 999 FINE SILVER". In-between "ROGER" and "1OZ" text is a little pair of cross swords.
The reverse side of this 2022 common wealth coin features the Queen's head, side profile, looking to the right. Same as the front side, there's a line waves background and rolling waves border.
At the bottom of the round is the year "2022", along the curve of the round is the text "ELIZABETH II NIUE TWO DOLLARS". NIUE is an island of New Zealand.
I picked up the black onyx micro crystal skull in the Rocky Mountains, Jasper, AB this past weekend, a solid pairing for the Jolly Roger round. More fine silver round booty for the stack.
Nice looking round, the history of John Rackham is interesting also, these may be colorful characters, but they're also real people. I wonder if "Jack Sparrow" was based off of John Rackham and his flamboyant reputation?
Calico Jack and Jack Sparrow, I see the connection too. John does seem to be one of the more notorious pirates, I could see them pulling some of his elements. Depp mentioned he borrowed from Kieth Richards, also flamboyant.
Jack didn't have a black flag attributed to him as far as any surviving recorded eye witness documents. The skull and crossed Cutlases where first attributed to Calico Jack in 1959 by publisher Hans Leip on a modern pop culture basis.
Since then this black flag stuck with Jack.
Ah nice, I didn't dig quite deep enough, thanks :)
Well I think each pirate, historical or fictional, could have his or her own black flag to keep up appearances anyway.
Very nice round for sure. I always love pirate lore. Now I want to go watch and episode or two of Black Sails😀
