With the announcement of this year’s #secretsilversanta already out there, I thought it might be the perfect time to stir up a little friendly discussion within the #silvergoldstackers community. After all, if you’ve signed up to take part, it wouldn’t hurt to drop a few hints about the kind of silver that really gets you excited, right?
So tonight’s question is simple, but surprisingly divisive: do you prefer silver bars, or silver coins/rounds?
On the surface it sounds like a trivial distinction, after all, silver is silver... But anyone who’s been stacking for a while knows there’s more to it than just metal content. Some of us love the clean, solid look of a bar: uniform, stackable, and with a certain no-nonsense weight that feels like wealth in your hand. Others prefer the artistry of coins and rounds, where every piece tells a story, from sovereign mints producing bullion steeped in history, to private mints striking rounds with creative, limited-edition designs.
It’s almost like the age-old debate between function and form. Bars represent practicality and value for money – you can usually get more silver for less premium. Coins and rounds, on the other hand, bring beauty, collectability, and sometimes even numismatic value into the mix.

So which camp do you fall into? Are you a bar stacker, keeping things neat and efficient, or a coin collector who loves the history and character etched into every ounce? Drop your preference in the comments below, and who knows, maybe your Secret Santa is paying attention. Come Christmas morning, you might just unwrap something in your favourite shape of silver

I prefer rounds. They fit in the tube better..
Years ago when I was trying to get Liz interested in stacking silver, I took her down to our local Coin shop and let her pick out her choice of Silver rounds!
“I like this one, and that one Silvertop!”🥰
The artistry of silver coins or rounds definitely plays a part in what gets chosen for our stack!😇👍
I prefer coins with the utility, history, character and shiny.
Whereas, my alter ego like poured pirate silver, pieces of eight, coins with ships and nautical shiny.

An interesting and though provoking question for sure! I like all types, whether a coin, round or bar. However, I like the western theme or Native American thing. I also am wondering if there are any silver rounds or bars referencing coffee or coffee beans? I did a quick search and turned up nothing, but didn't spend a lot of time or effort yet.
Coins are interesting because of the history aspect of the coin. The older, the better. So, Secret Santa, I'm open to anything really cool, but really would love a coffee themed round, bar or coin, if there is such a thing! However the Western/Native American thing works well too!
Thanks for the question @welshstacker! Take care and have a lovely day!
