Following on from our recent #secretsilversanta chats, here’s tonight’s quick question for the community: when it comes to silver, what size do you prefer? Do you like the classic 1oz coin, the heft of a 2oz (or bigger) piece, or do you treasure fractional silver, those smaller denominations like halves, quarters, or even pre-decimal/“constitutional” coins? There are good reasons for every choice(or so im told). The 1oz coin is the community standard for a reason: it’s recognisable, liquid, easy to sell, and usually the cheapest way to buy clean bullion per ounce. It’s also tidy for posting and packaging, which matters if you’re sending a Secret Santa parcel internationally. The 2oz (and larger) pieces feel more substantial in the hand and often make a nicer display piece; you get a satisfying physical presence, but they cost more upfront and can push postage costs up for the sender.
Fractional silver has its own charm. Smaller pieces make silver more affordable to buy and give a lot of flexibility: a Secret Santa who likes fractionals can receive a mix of coins to make up an ounce (two ½oz, four ¼oz, etc.), or you can gift a handful of historic “constitutional” US or pre-decimal UK silver coins for that nostalgia factor. Keep in mind, though, fractionals typically carry a higher premium per ounce than 1oz coins, and old circulated coins bring numismatic quirks (wear, varying sizes, and sometimes higher collector interest). They’re brilliant for character and story, less efficient purely for weight.

A few practical points to keep in mind for this year’s Secret Santa: our minimum is 1oz, so if you prefer fractionals make sure what you send totals at least an ounce(or more). Think about postage and packaging: heavier/bulkier coins or larger bars can push postage up, and international customs may add complexity (we’ve discussed North America vs the rest of the world before). If you want to get fancy, leave a short wishlist in the comments(bars, 1oz coins, 2oz, fractionals, or historic coins) so your Secret Santa has a head start.
I like the little tiny bars and rounds, like 1 gram, but it's very inefficient stacking. This may just be me, but I never really buy fractional bullion, for fractional, I buy pre-1968 Canadian or Newfoundland coins.
