The 1940 UK one Shilling coins: Two designs, one wartime coinage...

The year 1940 was a turbulent time for Britain, with World War II in full swing. Despite the chaos, the Royal Mint continued producing coinage, including the one shilling, a crucial piece of everyday currency. What makes 1940 particularly interesting for collectors and history enthusiasts is that two distinct designs of the one shilling were issued that year; one representing England and the other Scotland.

Two nations, two designs

The tradition of issuing two different one shilling designs began in 1937 under King George VI. This practice acknowledged the union between England and Scotland, each having a unique heraldic representation.

  1. The English Shilling – Features a crowned lion standing atop a Royal Crown. The inscription reads "FID DEF IND IMP," short for Fidei Defensor, Indiae Imperator (Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India).

  1. The Scottish Shilling – Depicts a crowned lion seated on a shield bearing the Scottish arms. The lettering follows the same format as the English version.

Both versions carried the portrait of King George VI on the obverse, designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget.

A wartime collectible

The 1940 one shilling coins are a fascinating piece of British history, issued at a time when the country was fighting for survival. Despite silver content being reduced to 50% in 1920, these coins still hold intrinsic value, making them desirable for collectors and silver stackers alike. The dual designs add an extra layer of interest, allowing collectors to seek out both versions to complete their set.

Whether for history, silver content, or numismatic appeal, the 1940 UK one shilling coins remain a unique and enduring relic of Britain's wartime resilience.
