Traps
All around us they are,
jobs from hell,
subscriptions to worthless things,
friends and lovers who pull us down,
causes that are false,
foods that kill slowly,
isms,
fears,
compunctions,
addictions,
retirement, sitting in coffee shops talking of the good ol'days.
Traffic jams,
line ups,
lies you believe,
truths you disbelieve,
hidden fees,
added taxes,
a missed bus, a missed call, a miss-spelled word,
you wonder if the world is against you,
another trap.
The blame game,
his fault, her fault, not my fault trap.
We all get into traps,
we move from one trap to another,
they are the way we cope,
with existence,
with uncertainty,
with mortality,
with not getting the trap we wanted,
so we settle for the trap we can get,
until we figure out we're just acting as though don't like them.
Then we smile and enter our next trap,
we think we have it all figured out trap,
the biggest trap of them all.
Be thankful you are sometimes unsure, unsettled,
at times longing for, what you can't put your finger on,
but it is there, beating, watching, waiting,
and most of all it keeps you alive.
