Nasılsınız? İyi misiniz? İyi olmaya çalışıyor musunuz? Bugün sebepsiz değildir diye düşünüyorum ama direkt isim koymakta zorlansam dahi üzerimde gereksiz fazlalıkta bir enerji var. Yerimde durasım gelmiyor. Dün içtiğim fazladan kahveler uykumu getirmek yerine acaba sonunda işlevini yerine getirip bir canlılık mı verdi bana?
Bugün size 15 yıldan fazladır yaşadığım İstanbul ilçesinin, Silivri'nin, nadir tarihi eserlerinden biri olan kalesinden ve son hâlinden bahsetmek istiyorum.
Biraz tarihe gireceğiz çünkü bence asıl hikâye orada. Kısa tutmaya çalışacağıma söz veriyorum ki zaten uzun bir tarihi de yok.
Arkadyos olarak da bilinen, Bizans İmparatoru Arkadyus, ilk olarak kim tarafından inşa edildiği bilinmeyen Silivri'de bulunan kaleyi Eudoxia ile evlendikten sonra onu onurlandırmak amacıyla restore ettirir ve şehrin ismini Eudoxiapolis yani kabaca Eudoxia şehri/kenti olarak değiştirir.
Kaleden günümüze kalabilen çok fazla eser olmasa da bazı eserlerin kökeni III. yüzyıla kadar uzanır. Tarihçi ve aynı zamanda yazar olan Prokopius ki kendisinin önemli bir eserini bahsettiğim kitap listemde de görebilirsiniz, VI. yüzyılda İmparator Justinyen’in, büyük bir depremde yıkılan Anastasius’un uzun suru ile birlikte Selymbria Kalesi’nin de restorasyonu için emir verdiğini belirtir.
İki yüzyıl kadar sonra V. Konstantinus ve yoldaşlarında biri tarafından Selymbria surları yeniden onarılmıştır. Anlayacağınız başı dertten kurtulmayan Selymbria'nın kurtarıcısı da bitmiyor. Kale son olarak II. Bayezid döneminde “Kıyamet-i Suğra” (Küçük Kıyamet) olarak anılan depremde gördüğü zarar üzerine son kez onarılıyor.
Peki ismi Eudoxiapolis'ten Selymbria'ya nasıl evriliyor?
İmparator Arkadyus her ne kadar eşini onurlandırmak için ismini vermiş olsa dahi halk bu ismi kabul etmemiş ki kısa zamanda Selymbria Bulgar Han Krum tarafından yağmalanıyor.
Hatta yerli halk arasında isim ile ilgili başka efsaneler de bulunuyor. 2010'ların başında yakın bir arkadaşımın anneannesi ile konuşurken birden kendi annesinden duyduğu bir hikâyeyi anlatmaya başlamıştı. Bu hikâyeyi neredeyse birinci ağızdan duyabildiğim için çok şanslıyım gerçekten.
Bizans İmparatorlarından biri, adını telaffuz edemediği için Cuncun diyordu şirin kadın ama hangi Cuncun olduğunu da kesinlikle hatırlamıyordu, Justinianus'lardan birisinin çok sevdiği eşi Selymbria çok hastalanmış. Ciğerleri güzeller güzeli kraliçeye ihanet etmiş ve Justinianus eşine bir tedavi arayışına girmiş. Çok fazla deneyler ile birlikte çok fazla başarısızlıkları olmuş. Tam umutlarını kesmek üzereyken köylülerden birisi askerlere bir kaleden bahsetmiş.
Kalenin havası o kadar şifalıymış ki yanından geçeni bile iyileştirirmiş. Askerlerden biri büyük bir heyecanla köylünün bahsettiği kaleyi komutanına söylemiş. Bu umutla da sözler hemen Justinianus'un kulağına gitmiş. Duyar duymaz da umudunu kaybetmek üzere olan imparator kraliçesini alıp bu kaleye gelmiş. Bir aya kalmadan tamamen iyileşen Selymbria'nın onuruna kaleye bu ismi vermiş imparator.
Zamanla da bölgede olan savaşlar ve değişen halk ile birlikte Selymbria ismi Silivri'ye dönüşmüş.
Evet, tarihçesinden de bahsettiğime göre biraz günümüze dönebilirim bence 😁 2020 yılında tekrar restorasyonu tamamlanan kale aslında oldukça yıpranmış durumdaydı. Eskiden basit bir surdan kapısı olan piknik ve düğün/nişan alanı iken Silivri Belediyesi'nin yaptığı restorasyon ile İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Sosyal Tesislerinden birisi hâline getiriliyor.
Hemen haritada nerede göründüğünü buraya ekliyorum. Tabii bu kadar düz göründüğüne bakmayın Silivri'nin en yüksek noktası burası. Her yoldan dik yokuşlar çıkarak gitmek zorundasınız.
Açıkçası ben bu restorasyonu duymadım. Bu yüzden de evime 10 dakika bile sürmeyen bir yürüme yolunda olan bu parka gitmiyordum. Annemin arkadaşları ile olan bir muhabbetinde buradan bahsedince annemin ısrarı ile geçen gün gittik ve ben gözlerime inanamadım.
Silivri'den fiziksel olarak tarih kokabilecek potansiyel beklemiyordum ne yalan söyleyeyim. Evet bazı Korinth ve İon başlıkları vardı fakat bu kadardı.
Tarih ilgilisi ve bir noktada tarihçi sayılabilecek biri olarak büyük bir hayal kırıklığına uğradığımı söylemeliyim. Süngerbob'u hatırlıyor musunuz? Gerçekten büyük bir fark yok. Kale surlarını, o noktadaki, ona çevirmişler resmen. Hele ki bir nokta var ona ileride geleceğim o tamamıyla rezillik...
Neyse.
İçeride çok insan olduğu için açıkçası direkt kafenin fotoğrafını çekmek istemedim. Bu yüzden açık hava müzesi hâline getirilmiş eserlere geçeceğim ama bundan önce sizinle bu minik kafenin menüsünü paylaşmak istiyorum. Buradan bakabilirsiniz. Fiyatlar klasik sosyal tesis fiyatları ama bir artısı bulunuyor. Burada diğer tesislere göre farklı olarak kart, kredi kartı geçerli. Bu en azından bir artı.
Yukarıdaki fotoğrafta gördüğünüz kale girişinin hemen sol tarafında ilk eserleri görebiliyorsunuz. Gezime sol taraftan başlamak istedim çünkü sağ tarafta amfi tiyatro olduğunu okudum. Bu yüzden en sona en güzeli saklamak istedim.
Hatta burada lahit mezarlar varmış da benim haberim yokmuş. Kapak yok elbette. Ama üzerindeki üçgen çatıdan dolayı aklıma direkt Likya tipi mezarlar geldi fakat burada insanlar eşyalarını üzerine koyamasınlar diye de yapmış olabilecekleri aklıma geldi. Zor ama imkânsız değil çünkü.
Burada çok belli olmuyor fakat sol taraftaki başlıkta Grekçe yazılar bulunuyor. Üzerindeki melekler ve hafif zarar görmüş haç aslında gerçekten de III. ya da IV. yüzyıllara dayandığını daha da bir belli ediyor. Bizans sağ olsun.
Bölgede çok fazla savaş ve "el değiştirme" olduğu için açık hava müzesinde birbirine oldukça uzak zamanlara ait yapılar var. Genel olarak sütunlar ve başlıkları var. Tabii sol tarafta görebileceğiniz gibi çeşmeler de var ve bu çeşme hâlâ kullanılıyor. Hatta makyajım olmasaydı annem gibi ben de serin suyuyla yüzümü bir yıkardım. Yokuş çıkmak zorunda olunca böyle oluyor ne yazık ki 😂
Yanlış saymadıysam 50'den fazla parça bulunuyor. Bu kadar uzun uzun göstermek istemiyorum size sıkmamak için bu yüzden size bu açık hava müzesindeki en büyük hayal kırıklığım olan yere götürmek istiyorum.
Amfi tiyatro
Anneme heyecanlı bir şekilde "Anne bak böyle bir şey olabilir, aslında da böyle olabilir." derken karşıma birden Süngerbob'un kuzeninin çıkmış olması... Hayal kırıklığımın sonu gelmiyor. Bitmiyor. Buraya oturmakta herhangi bir sakınca yok. Kafeden alabileceğiniz karton bardaktaki içeceğiniz ile burada manzaraya karşı çok güzel sohbetler olabilir.
Amfi tiyatro her ne kadar hayal kırıklığı olsa da manzara kesinlikle öyle değil.
Apaçık bir günde, güneş alerjime rağmen gün ortasında kıpkırmızı olmak pahasına burada bütün günümü geçirebilirim. Bol ağaçlı olmasına rağmen elbette yaşlı çınarların heybeti bir yere kadar size ulaşabiliyor.
Tabii surlar burada bitmiyorlar. Silivri'nin bir mahallesi, Fatih mahallesi, bu surlar ile çevrili. Hatta en büyük pazar olan Pazartesi Pazarı'nın girişinde bu surların kalıntılarından bulunuyor. Hatta hemen dibinde çok yüksek binalar var.
Evet, Şifanın Kalesi gezim bu kadardı. Tabii sonrasında Gratis'e gidip sanki kırmızı değilmişim gibi allık aldım orası ayrı bir konu 🤣 Yaşadığım yerde bu tarz eserleri gezdikten sonra bir anda gündelik yaşama dönmek çok garip hissettirdi çünkü rehberlik yapabildiğim dönemde geziler bütün gün sürüp gün içerisinde bu kadar büyük bir çağ atlama nadir oluyordu.
Bugünlük benden bu kadar. Bir sonraki görüşmemizde size Tüyap'tan bahsetmek istiyorum. Parçalarından elbette bahsettim fakat direkt kendisinden değil.

How are you? Are you all right? Are you trying to be well? I think today is not without reason, but even if I have difficulty putting a direct name to it, there is an unnecessary excess of energy in me. I can't stay still. I wonder if the extra coffee I drank yesterday, instead of making me sleepy, finally fulfilled its function and gave me vitality.
Today I would like to tell you about the fortress, one of the rare historical artefacts of Silivri, the district of Istanbul where I have lived for more than 15 years, and its final state.
We're going to go into a little bit of history because I think that's where the real story is. I promise I'll try to keep it short, and it's not a long history anyway.
Byzantine Emperor Arcadius had the fortress in Silivri, which was originally built by an unknown person, restored to honour Eudoxia after his marriage to her and changed the name of the city to Eudoxiapolis, roughly Eudoxia city.
Although not many artefacts have survived from the fortress, some of the artefacts date back to the III. century. The historian and writer Procopius, whose important work can be found in my book list, states that in the VI. century, Emperor Justinian ordered the restoration of the Selymbria Fortress along with the long wall of Anastasius, which was destroyed in a great earthquake.
Two centuries later, Constantine V and one of his companions rebuilt the walls of Selymbria. As you can see, Selymbria, which is never out of trouble, never runs out of saviours. The fortress was repaired for the last time during the reign of Bayezid II, after it was damaged by the earthquake known as "Kıyamet-i Suğra" (Small Apocalypse).
So how did the name evolve from Eudoxiapolis to Selymbria?
Even though Emperor Arcadius gave the name to honour his wife, the people did not accept the name and soon Selymbria was sacked by the Bulgarian Khan Krum.
There are even other legends about the name among the locals. In the early 2010s, I was talking to the grandmother of a close friend of mine and she suddenly started telling me a story she had heard from her own mother. I was very lucky to hear this story almost in the first person.
One of the Byzantine Emperors, the cute woman called JunJun because she couldn't pronounce his name, and she couldn't remember which JunJun it was, Selymbria, the beloved wife of one of Justinian's emperors, became very ill. Her lungs betrayed the beautiful queen and Justinian sought a cure for his wife. There were too many experiments and too many failures. Just when they were about to give up hope, one of the villagers told the soldiers about a fortress.
The air of the fortress was so healing that it healed even those who passed by. One of the soldiers told his commander about the fortress mentioned by the villager with great excitement. With this hope, the words immediately went to Justinian's ear. As soon as he heard, the emperor, who was about to lose hope, came to this fortress with his queen. The emperor gave this name to the fortress in honour of Selymbria, who recovered completely within a month.
In time, with the wars in the region and the people who moved, the name Selymbria turned into Silivri.
Yes, now that I have mentioned its history, I think I can return to the present 😁 The fortress, whose restoration was completed in 2020, was actually quite worn out. While it used to be a picnic and wedding/engagement area with a simple fortified gate, it is being turned into one of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Social Facilities with the restoration made by Silivri Municipality.
I am adding here where it appears on the map. Of course, don't look at how smooth it looks, this is the highest point of Silivri. You have to go up steep slopes from every road.
Honestly, I had not heard about this restoration. Therefore, I was not going to this park, which is on a walking path that does not even take 10 minutes from my house. When my mother mentioned this place in a conversation with her friends, we went the other day with my mother's insistence and I could not believe my eyes.
To tell you the truth, I did not expect Silivri to have the potential to physically smell of history. Yes, there were some Corinthian and Ionian capitals, but that was it.
As someone who is interested in history and can be considered a historian at some point, I must say that I was very disappointed. Do you remember SpongeBob? There's really no big difference. They've turned the fortress walls, at that point, into that. Especially there's a spot, I'll come to it later, that's a complete disgrace...
Anyway.
I didn't want to take photos of the cafe because there were too many people inside, so I'll move on to the artefacts that have been turned into an open-air museum, but before that I want to share the menu of this tiny cafe with you. You can check it out here. The prices are classic social facility prices, but there is a plus. Unlike other facilities, credit cards is valid here. This is at least a plus.
You can see the first artefacts on the left side of the entrance of the fortress you see in the photo above. I wanted to start my trip from the left side because I read that there is an amphitheatre on the right side. So I wanted to save the most beautiful one for last.
I didn't even know there were tombs here. There is no lid, of course. But because of the triangular roof on it, I immediately thought of Lycian type tombs, but I also thought that they might have been built so that people could not put their belongings on it. Because it is difficult but not impossible.
It is not very visible here, but there are Greek inscriptions on the cap on the left side. The angels on it and the slightly damaged cross make it even more obvious that it actually dates back to the III. or IV. centuries. Thanks to Byzantium.
Since there was a lot of war and "handover" in the region, the open-air museum has structures from quite distant times. There are mainly columns and headpieces. Of course, as you can see on the left side, there are also fountains and this fountain is still in use. If I didn't have make-up on, I would have washed my face with its cool water like my mum. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you have to go uphill 😂
If I have not counted wrong, there are more than 50 pieces. I don't want to show you so long so as not to bore you, so I want to take you to the place that was my biggest disappointment in this open-air museum.
Amphitheatre
I was excitedly saying to my mum, "Mum, look, it could be like this, it could actually be like this," and suddenly SpongeBob's cousin appeared in front of me... There's no end to my disappointment. It doesn't end. There's no harm in sitting here. You can have a drink in a cardboard cup from the cafe and have a very nice conversation against the view.
Although the amphitheatre is disappointing, the view is definitely not.
On a clear day, despite my allergy to the sun, I could spend the whole day here at the risk of turning red in the middle of the day. Although there are plenty of trees, of course the majesty of the old plane trees can only reach you up to a certain point.
Of course the city walls do not end here. A neighbourhood of Silivri, Fatih quarter, is surrounded by these walls. Even at the entrance of the biggest bazaar, the Monday Bazaar, there are the remains of these walls. There are even very high buildings right at the bottom.
Yes, this was my trip to the Fortress of Healing. Of course, afterwards, I went to Gratis and bought blush as if I wasn't red 🤣 It felt very strange to return to daily life after visiting such pieces in the place where I live, because when I was able to be a guide, the trips lasted all day and such a big leap forward during the day was rare.

Silivri'de hâlâ bazı dükkanlar, esnaflar ve turizm şirketleri Selymbria'yı aktif olarak kullanıyor fakat asıl amaç turizm. Yapacak bir şey yok. Silivri'nin soğukluğunun Selymbria ismine bulaşmasını istemezdim bu yüzden bir noktada güzel oldu.
