I'm going to start this by saying Noob alert! I'm super green in the world of archery. I had a bit of an exposure to archery in high school. I would go down to the local bow range about once a month and rent a compound bow for a couple hours and have a blast. But this was for just a short period of time. As I got older and hobbies were coming and going archery was always at the back of my mind. Fast forward to today and I'm 35 and I still hadn't pick up a bow again. Honestly it's only been the last few years that I have really been jonesing to pick up a bow. I got back into hunting 2 years ago and as much as hunting with a rifle is awesome. There is something so primitive and sexy hunting with a bow. Unfortunately at the moment I'm at a point in my life were I don't have lots of disposable income for more hobbies and archery can be so damn expensive. Luckily I'm the type of person that can learn really quick on how to build something. One day while I was scrolling through Youtube I came across a video of a guy building a bow out of a 1 1/4 inch piece of PVC and using paracord for a bow string. At that moment I realized that maybe I can afford to shoot some arrows. so I started building...
My first bow was a horse bow. It is 58 inch long, Draws 55lbs at 28inches.
Bought a cheap set of carbon arrows off Amazon and I was set. For my first 2 weeks I shot it every night, I was hooked!
I was starting to get some decent groups in the 10-15 yard range. I was curious what a lighter poundage bow would feel like if. Mainly so I could focus on my form. The 55 had power but man did I ever feel it in the upper back. So I made another bow!
Another Horse bow this one I made out of 1inch PVC. Overall length 56" and draws 45lbs at 28inches. And man did this bow just feel right. Now in my infinite pursuit of being as self sustainable as possible I obviously had to make my arrows as well.
I made the Jig to make the shaft, I harvested the Sinew to wrap the fletching and head. made the head out of mild steel.
1 inch PVC 60inches long 32pounds at 28inces. Standard recurve.
And now I'm on to my next project, a red oak board bow. Straight grained and will be a pyramid flat bow!
PVC FOR THE WIN!
Good post mate...Wouldn't mind seeing the link to that PVC bow if you have it still.
I tried to be patient once...It took too long so I gave up. :)
Seriously though, thanks.
haha no worries as a mechanic and a dad to a rambunctious 2 year old you learn quick how to have patience.
Lol...Yep I reckon that would do it. I'm don't have a child so...I get to be the child!. 🤣
