Over the years, I've had to create many Hive accounts for just as many projects. Just recently another few accounts for beescrow.app. But my own account creation tool hadn’t really been maintained anymore, so I thought I'd boot it up again - and while doing so, improve the flow even further.
After a bit of work, I'm glad to announce that the account creation tool is now live on HiveDapps.com.
There are two flows to create accounts:
- Create them yourself
- Shareable URL to have it created by someone else
Create it yourself
This flow is probably the fastest way to create an account on Hive. After recording it, I've also added the option to quickly add the keys to Hive Keychain afterwards.
Shareable URL to have it created by someone else
This flow is great for onboarding your friends to Hive.
They simply follow the flow to select their account name and back up their password and keys, then share the link, which contains the username and public keys. Since we're a social media blockchain by default, having legitimate people find others to create their account for them shouldn’t be (pun intended) an issue. I even included the official Hive Discord as well, so they know where to go.
Then you just follow the link and broadcast the account creation operation.
Easy, right? When I got the idea for that flow recently, I was astounded that nobody had implemented it yet. Well, just before writing this post today, I stumbled upon the account creation tool from @thebeedevs, which actually allows for that flow as well. Haha, crazy. Kudos, though!
Anyway, I hope you'll find it useful. It's currently hosted on HiveDapps.com, which some of you might remember as a website that hosted statistics about Hive applications. I'm planning to bring it back to life in some way, though considering DappRadar does a great job with statistics, I'm not sure if it will focus on that. I'm open to feedback or ideas - hence why I'm sharing it here.

Does the workflow work on mobile? That's the main time I want to get someone on hive. The inertia of them wanting to do it at a desktop is a real barrier.

So basically the user navigates to https://hivedapps.com, selects username, downloads backup (saved in clipboard on keychain browser) and then shares either link or QR code with you.
You can create the account either on desktop yourself or on mobile via keychain in-app browser.
Website then periodically checks whether the new hive account exists, and once it does, allows the user to also add keys directly to keychain (if needed).

When you login to hivedapps.com you'll see the amount of tokens you have and a button to claim. Claiming costs RC.
Mine just does it automatically via Keychain xD

Why is Keychain the only Auth method to login?

Well nothing in particular. But, there aren't also other Auth methods such as: HiveAuth, HiveSigner, PeakLock and the simpler and traditional WIF method of authentication of ever?
