Honeybees and pollination

in FreeComplimentslast month

Honeybees are the reason our planet is colourful. Their role as pollinators is very crucial. Their buzzing wings have given life to our planet.

As the honeybees move from one flower to another to collect nectar and pollen, they also play a significant role in the process of pollination leading to fertilisation then production of fruits and seed. This process is beneficial for the entire ecosystem of the earth.

Honeybees have sophisticated lifestyle. Every bee has a role assigned to them and they are programmed to it by birth. They are incredibly sophisticated creatures. They work in collaboration with each other. Isn't it amazing that thousands of thousands of bees are working together to build a colony. With a pollen sized brain they have acquired quality to work to perfection.

They have specific roles as nurses, janitors, foragers and queens of their hives.

Here's detailed look at each of their roles:

Nurses honeybees: They have an important role in maintaining the health and sustainability of hives. They are unsung heroes of hives. As their role is important for sustainability and survival of hives.

  • Their primary role is to take care of larvae. They have the task of feeding them with a protein rich royal jelly secreted by their hypopharyngeal glands. These royal jelly are vital for the growth and development of larvae.

  • They regulate the temperature by clustering around broods to keep them warm or fanning their wings to keep the brood cool to keep the temperature ideal for larvae.

  • Nurses also keep the hive clean by removing dead bees and debris. To keep the hive parasite and disease free for larvae and queen.

  • In addition to taking care of larvae they also have to take care of the queen. They groom, clean and feed the queen so she can only focus on laying eggs.

  • They transform into foragers after their initial role of nurse. It happens after two weeks of working as a nurse.

Janitors honeybees: Their role may seem small but it's fundamental for hives' longevity, and survival.

  • They maintain the hygiene of hives by removing dead bees, debris and wastes to keep it safe from diseases and parasites.

  • They remove dead larvae and bees to help prevent spread of infectious diseases to keep the environment of the hive healthy.

  • Disposal of dead bees is also one of their duties. They carry it and throw it far away from the hive. It prevents decaying of wastes inside the hive. Thus making them important for the sanitation and health of the hive.

Foragers honeybees: They are tireless workers of the hive. Their role is very crucial for survival and prosperity of their colony.

  • They are 3 or 4 weeks old mature worker bees.

  • They are the only type of honeybees who perform the dangerous task of working outside the hive.

  • They are resource collectors and food gatherers for the entire colony, such as nectar, pollen, water and plant resins.

  • They collect a sweet nectar produced by flowers which is their source of carbohydrates which provides energy to bees.

  • They collect pollen as it is the protein source for young bees' growth.

Queen bee: They are the heart of the hive. They manage and play an important role in the survival of the colony.

  • They lay upto 2000 eggs in a single day.

  • The queen mates multiple drones during the mating period for genetic diversity.

You must have understood how honeybees play a vital role in the ecosystems of the earth. It is because of these creatures we see blooming gardens and ample harvest. They are precious little insects which need to be protected for the benefit of our world.

I totally agree with you. We should all do our parts to preserve this population.

We have damaged our environment already, now we should reverse some damages!

It's all thanks to honey bees because only because of them our planet earth is colorful and vibrant as they are natural pollinator and spreading colors of flower all around us. But, pesticides and herbicides with alot of chemicals are danger for these sensitive creatures of nature.
