When I arrived at a new company as an intern during college holidays, I didn't really think much of the overall picture. I didn't ask any questions about what they were doing or what questions I needed to be asking. When I got in I felt good, I thought everything from the front reception being clean to the reps smiling was enough. But as it turns out, none of it was.
When you finally settle into a spot that you thought was going to be your new home and then find out you are not at home, you go through a loss process. You give it time, you modify your behaviour to fit the setting, like the many times you attempt to do this where you learn the names of those who are not even important to your day to day life and have no meaningful impact on you and you ignore signs that seem to be everywhere that tell you it’s probably not a good place to be.
A successful business that is unable to describe accurately how they do business, should prompt you to question your need to be there. If the people in that business revel in their busy schedule but don't produce anything significant, then you should think long and hard about signing anything. Oh yes the door was nice and ghe offer gave me hope that after college I'll be in a good place.
But question is hope for what? That’s what I didn’t think to ask I was so excited about the opening. And whether you are successful in being hired to work there or not, eventually your employment with that employer will come to an end.
Too many businesses do a great job of presenting themselves as an opportunity, they can make their businesses look good. But they take longer to get a true feel of how they operate internally and by that time, you will be there for an extended period and will be limited in your options to leave based on experience.
