ποΈ COMMENTARY
Envy is highly destructive, it strains our lives, warps our sense of judgement, kills our creativity and potentials. Under the guise of trying to be better than our neighbour, we chase after much destructive foolishness in envy. King Ahab was envious of Naboth's vineyard. He must have spent sleepless nights, wishing it had been his. When it was not forth coming, he became disconsolate, miserable and refused to eat. Yet, he was the King of Samaria (ten/twelfths of Israel). He could have hired the best gardener to plant for him, even within his palace, a vineyard that is much better than that Naboth had if it was all he needed. Of course,
he had the resources to do so and more. But his brain was so shut down
by envy that he could not think straight. What a terrible self destruction!
Often, people become miserable when someone with whom they have marched themselves seems to own what they think should be theirs. If they were not really making unnecessary comparison, thinking that they were the only cock that should crow, wisdom would have taught them that with diligence, they can have what that neighbour has, if not more. If he bought a car, he only bought it for himself he does not have the monopoly of cars. If he went to school, the road to school is not shut against you. King Ahab lost all by killing Naboth. Never give yourself to envy. What God did for one person, He can do for another. Thank God for what your neighbour has that you lack. Then believe Him for yours and He will give it to you.
