I've gotten into the habit of browsing Rate your music and selecting some interesting albums to listen to and get to know new music. As a compulsive music consumer, it's hard to get into those sound hiatuses where everything you listen to seems tired and faded (even if it's highly refreshing and innovative, but you've already heard too much), so this site has been a lifesaver. And along with this habit, I've been exploring jazz a bit more, especially in the mornings, when my head is still starting up the operating system. Jazz is a genre that has always intrigued me a lot, whether because of its sonic complexity, its intricate arrangements and fluidity or even its atonal strangeness, which is almost uncomfortable at times. Today I stumbled across an exuberant piece called Black Unity by the very interesting Pharoah Sanders.

Black Unity, is a masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of conventional jazz, bumps into that transcendent, spiritual thing that is occasionally incorporated into edge jazz, and is practically an official sub-genre. Released in 1971, at a time of intense social unrest in the United States, Black Unity wildly manages to capture the social and political effervescence of the time, and also serves as a powerful affirmation of African-American identity and the quest for freedom and justice alongside that sense of fierce transcendence.
The album consists of a single 37-minute track, divided into four distinct but interconnected parts, which unfold like an epic journey through cosmic soundscapes and hypnotic rhythms. Pharoah Sanders is a sax legend and, in a way, the spiritual leader of free jazz, which became a very strong musical movement in those decades and aimed to achieve advanced layers of sound experimentation, guiding listeners through his daring and completely non-standard improvisations, conveying a range of emotions from euphoria to serene contemplation.

The rhythm section, made up of bassist Cecil McBee, percussionist Billy Hart and drummer Norman Connors, provides a solid and pulsating base for Sanders' sound explorations, creating a groove carpet that allows the improvisations to expand and contract in a cosmic dance of sound and silence. If the listener allows themselves to cross the initial barrier that forms with such complexity and sonic effervescence, they will walk through hypnotic landscapes of rich emotional and vibrational charge.
Black Unity incorporates elements of African music, funk and experimental music on a visceral level, a reflection of the sonic charge acquired by the brilliant Sanders. At a time when the struggle for civil rights and the quest for racial equality were at the center of attention in the United States, Black Unity emerged as a sonic testimony to the resilience and determination of black people in their quest for justice and freedom. This timeless visionary work of art was hidden from me until today, and I'm listening to it even as I write this text. I hope you've enjoyed getting to know this work a little more. Eu tenho me habituado a navegar pelo Rate your music e selecionar alguns álbuns interessantes para ouvir e conhecer novas músicas. Como um consumidor compulsivo de música é complicado entrar nesses hiatos sonoros onde tudo que você ouve parece já cansado e desbotado (ainda que sejam coisas altamente refrescantes e inovadoras, mas que você já ouviu demais), esse site tem sido uma salvação. E junto a esse hábito, tenho feito o exercício de explorar um pouco mais o jazz, especialmente pelas manhãs, quando a cabeça ainda está iniciando o sistema operacional, o jazz é um gênero que sempre me intrigou bastante, seja pela sua complexidade sonora, pelos seus intrincados traquejos e fluidez ou mesmo pela estranheza atonal e quase desconfortável em determinados momentos. Hoje acabei esbarrando em uma peça exuberante, chamada Black Unity do interessantíssimo Pharoah Sanders.

Black Unity, é uma obra-prima que transcende as fronteiras do jazz convencional, esbarra nessa coisa do transcedente, espiritual que ocasionalmente está incorporada ao jazz de borda, e é praticamente um subgênero oficial. Lançado em 1971, em um momento de intensa agitação social nos Estados Unidos, Black Unity consegue de forma selvagem capturar a efervescência social e política da época, e também serve como uma afirmação poderosa da identidade afro-americana e da busca pela liberdade e justiça juntamente a essa sensação de transcendência feroz.
O álbum é composto por uma única faixa de 37 minutos de duração, dividida em quatro partes distintas, mas interconectadas, que se desdobram como uma jornada épica através de paisagens sonoras cósmicas e ritmos hipnóticos.
