Its late March in 2013 and the Microsoft store on my Xbox was advertising a new free to play game, Warframe. I was extremely interested in Warframe, it was advertised as this magical space ninja rpg, and it was free so why not. Warframes story begins with a choice between 3 Warframes. Excalibur, Mag, and Loki. I had never seen such interesting characters, one could control gravity, one could go invisible, and the ither could summon a magic sword. I chose mag because the power of gravity was the most interesting, I had already fallen in love with Warframe.
Warframe started out fairly bland on release, the story was kind of generic and the weapons were not as plentiful as they are now, however the gameplay loop was so good that everything else could easily be overlooked. Warframe constantly updated and added these large expansions every few months, thes expansions were entirely free and greatly improved the game. I feel like most the expansions after the Venus openworld were the worst the developers have ever made. Soem expansions like archwings were controversial but i felt they improved the experience. Warframe has a premium currency called Platinum, on release you didn't really feel pressured to spend any money on the game, but that would change. The store has become more and more egregious, the prices of items are way to high, 80 dollars for a Warframe and a couple guns should never have existed, prime access is a scam.
I stopped playing Warframe almost a year ago, the game has gone stale and the developers are actively hurting their player base with the decisions they make. Not too long ago the devs were the best part of the game, they were relatable and passionate for the game, but it feels like that changed. I will always have a place for Warframe in my heart, I spent seven years with the game, but its not the same game anymore.
I enjoyed Warframe for a bit. I didn't spend a single $ on it and just enjoyed as much free content as I could. I played mostly the Volt frame which was the starter frame and the Trinity Prime frame I got from Twitch Prime. I unlocked a few others by some means I can't remember. If you just play it with a casual mindset that you won't even unlock everything it has unless you spend big dollars it's pretty cool.
I can definitely agree with that, however these types of games can be quite difficult to play with a casual mindset. RPG's are notorious for sucking you in and being grindy messes. I am glad that you have enjoyed the game, it will always have a place in my heart. However over the last 2 years both the game itself and the community have gone down hill, most content creators have left the game. Warframe was once a prime example of what free to play games should be, and it is still an amazinf f2p experience. So many mechanics of the game seem to have been downgraded. The current relic system used to be a Void Key for prime parts, now the void is almost useless and serves little purpose.
